I can totally understand her why she's doing it. It's symbolic, it's a way of keeping the flame burning, of reminding herself the the struggle is not over.

BTW, it's a very Colombian thing. I had a friend who had sworn to wear white until she achieved a goal she had set in her life.

It's not a political satetment, it's personal statement.

However, this action is just silly. I am all for her pursuing the release of the other hostages through serious diplomatic and political means, but this is the kind of nonsense that superstitious people do when they have no real means to affect change. She has the world's attention and this is hardly the way to make the best use of it. I hope it doesn't take that long, but who is going to take her seriously when she has hair down to her knees if it takes years to secure the release of the others?

critricism, ah criticism....what a charade thou art. in all honesty, i can't imagine some of the mean spirited comments i've heard from so many of you. then....defending them.

this lady wide of your obvious beliefs, is a person, she has been held prisoner, been violated in every sense of the word, and chastized without end for her survival and actions post that.

i have no way nor means of imagining what goes on in side her head...do you? i've had an incredible, varied life...however, it's nothing to what this woman has endured.

i just ask you all why you attack her bones to pick and rattle until she dies? do you feel bigger, more important/as important, somebody special because you bully and belittle the downtrodden (whoever they may be.)??

now, because she has said she'll let her hair grow until the hostages are freed, you once again attack her and take her to task. strange.

you ask what that will do? in my eyes a whole hellofa lot more than your mean-sprirted-ness. what will that do? you treat this pained, pitiful survivor like she's joan of farc. you want to burn her at the stake.

would the release of the hostages be advanced more if she climed atop a building and cried in three tongues (languages) that she had been repeatedly physically violated and vomited out the hideous details to your wretched satisfaction??? i really fuckin think not.

i feel a bit like peter here...even in wonderment, after hearing all this--and even i was a bit incensed at her comment re thanks to france--what is it that any of you are doing as it relates to the freeing of the countless other hostages still living in hell.

maybe if she fasted...would you let up then? but tell me, what would that do to actually and in reality aid their situation?

i pray that all of us...me included...can wash ourselves of this horrible attitude that's dripping off these pages and come up a little brighter in sympathy and compassion.

ColombianoGringo: I am sure that she agrees 100% with pursuing diplomatic and political means, because those are the types of things that will produce results. But lets be honest, how many days has it been since she got out of the jungle and how long was she there?

As Desi pointed out, this is nothing more than a reminder not a superstition. Silly? Sure. How many football teams shave their heads or get mohawks? How many family's have shaved their head to show solidarity with their child that is going through cancer treatment? How many people keep a lock of hair or where a pin to remember a missing loved one?

My point is this, I highly doubt that this is her master plan for getting the hostages released. And getting them released, ultimately, is the job of Uribe and the Colombian military. Hopefully, she will use her celebrity and what she has gone through and her connections to raise concern/awareness, etc. But again, how long has it been?

We should all be much more worried about billyb at this moment. He is putting himself and everyone around him at risk. billyb, you are a brave man...we all know it. But please don't do this to yourself!

mother theresa was the last speaker. bare in mind, mother theresa is about 4'2" tall and didn't even reach the podium. so after no little adjustments they fixed her mike.

she began by complimenting everyone, young and old, educated and illiterate, cultured and primative (they had head hunters of the putimayo there) for their contributions and commented as to how impressed she was with all their presentations. then....she said..."myself and the sisters and mercy do it a little differently....when we go out in the mornings to feed the poor, we take some bread, we put it in our little bag--pointing out the white cotton bag she wore around her neck--and we walk the streets." Lcacique says on Jul 10, 2008, 13:41:

billyb: the FARC over the years have had no reason to give up through negotiations because they were never threatened. They controlled a nice chunk of Colombia. the state was absent from large sectors of the country. The US drug policy of wiping out the Cartels put a huge source of $'s into their laps. Of course negotiations were never successful. Why would they be? The FARC had no reason to negotiate because the state was impotent.

I do not discredit the value of the military or their operations. Things are clearly changing for the FARC. Now they are severely weakened and I do not envision this trend reversing because of the resolve of the Colombian government/military/people to not allow it to happen again. So, yes the military has been successful in my opinion. I'm not predicting that they won't be in the future. However, I would be concerned about using the military to attempt another rescue because it is doubtful that the FARC would be stupid enough to fall for something again. Therefore, a military solution may not produce the same miraculous results. But I think there is a good possibility that negotiations will be possible with the FARC at some point because the State finally has the upper hand and the FARC are falling apart. So the circumstances are completely different than what they were in the past.

More importantly, what I said does not somehow exclude the importance of other options (i.e. the military) anyway. What it means is that growing her hair will not produce results, but the things that I mentioned will. In addition, there has to be a political will to do something otherwise the military will not be used in the first place.

You are all right. My point is simply that I truly believe that we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This doesn't mean that everything is going to be peachy. There will always be people lured to the enormous profits found in the drug industry and given its illegality we know what types will be involved. Will some former FARC members fracture off and create or join Cartelitos? Probably, in my opinion. My whole fear is what is next? Getting rid of the FARC is excellent, but Colombia has a lot of obstacles to overcome and "we" are fooling ourselves if "we" think that the drug problem and violence will disappear if the FARC falls off the face of the earth. That does not mean it should not be pursued.

Well, it is difficult to get away when I have to care for my mother 24/7. I have to wait until people come to visit me.

Aint read the whole thread - Saw the tail end of the Larry King interview last night - among not hating the FARC one of her biggest problems was that she was the only women in her group and having to wash her hair took so long that she was always late.

She now has me convinced that she is a total idiot and I can't wait to get to Medallo to actually hear what real Colombians think of her. I promise I won't be baised but I have a feeling her life is not safe in Colombia. No wonder she immediately blew the hell out.

What she represented - a famous face for all secuestrados - and the fact that she got freed is the only good news. But she will do pretty much nothing with her media power to aid against the terrorists that held her stupid ass captive for 7 years.
