Lcacique says on Jul 10, 2008, 13:41: billyb: the FARC over the years have had no reason to give up through negotiations because they were never threatened. They controlled a nice chunk of Colombia. the state was absent from large sectors of the country. The US drug policy of wiping out the Cartels put a huge source of $'s into their laps. Of course negotiations were never successful. Why would they be? The FARC had no reason to negotiate because the state was impotent. Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
ColombianoGringo says on Jul 10, 2008, 13:45: I have no problem with negotiations as long as they don't involve ceding two towns to the farc. I have serious doubts about the potential for fruitful negotiations, but it is worth a try.
0 funny, 0 helpful. |
dwmte7 says on Jul 10, 2008, 13:49: i agree..don't look for the insurgents to fall for that one again...i fear that future military ops will be excercises in blood letting. on both sides including hostages. the "so called" high value captives are out. and as sad as this sounds, those still in captivity, are rank and file military and police and campesinos. sad to think of their chances of getting out with the same glory as did the recently liberated captives. those bad guys are really pissed now. dwmte 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
Lcacique says on Jul 10, 2008, 13:54: I'm not talking about giving these guys flowers either, ColombianoGringo. To hell with giving them a street, let alone two towns. Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
dwmte7 says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:18: i'm anything but a negotiator, but what does it take to convince these folks to 'hang it up' and go home, have a life, etc? dwmte 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
Lcacique says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:37: dwmte7, it seems like many of the rank and files have been recently. A few years ago their numbers were increasing not decreasing. And I think that this trend will continue. Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
billyb says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:51: Yes, I think that when talk about the FARC we have to differentiate between the few hard core elements and the vast majority of rank and file that just want to get their lives going.

dwmte7 says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:58: seems real doesnt it, cacique and billy....who the f wants to spend their life in the selva as a hunted man, apart from anything remotely resembling a life...no wife, no kids, no folks, friends, etc.? dwmte 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
ColombianoGringo says on Jul 10, 2008, 16:09: Remember that the farc has a policy of killing deserters. They have been to go after the families when the deserter can't be found.

dwmte7 says on Jul 10, 2008, 17:09: CG with the heirarchy dead or missing....don't you think that 'reprisal' posture is beginning to die/collapse? dwmte 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
billyb says on Jul 10, 2008, 17:21: I agree Douglas, it's kind of like in the US mafia nowadays, nobody is afraid of retaliation anymore since all the bosses are in the clink, so they are all singing and omerta is just a fond memory.
0 funny, 0 helpful. |
ColombianoGringo says on Jul 10, 2008, 17:31: With the farc, I would imagine that it comes down to the leaders of the individual fronts. I'm sure some of them are still enforcing the deserter executions.

Lcacique says on Jul 10, 2008, 18:11: You are all right. My point is simply that I truly believe that we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This doesn't mean that everything is going to be peachy. There will always be people lured to the enormous profits found in the drug industry and given its illegality we know what types will be involved. Will some former FARC members fracture off and create or join Cartelitos? Probably, in my opinion. My whole fear is what is next? Getting rid of the FARC is excellent, but Colombia has a lot of obstacles to overcome and "we" are fooling ourselves if "we" think that the drug problem and violence will disappear if the FARC falls off the face of the earth. That does not mean it should not be pursued. Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
dwmte7 says on Jul 11, 2008, 06:14: i probably agree with all those poins CG and cacique....the insurgents in the not to distant future, i believe will be neutralized...because as i mentioned in earlier threads, the peons in the ranks don't participate in the profits. they get three hots and a cot...if that. i believe they for the most part just want to go home to their lives family and patria. dwmte 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Lcacique says on Jul 11, 2008, 10:23: Colombia still has a LOT of work to do with respect to its justice system, increasing state presence (an HONEST presence there to SERVE and PROTECT) in rural localities and improving the opportunities for those who live in such regions. It HAS made strides in all of these areas and I hope that it continues to do so AGGRESSIVELY.
