Colombia's Betancourt says she'll run for president

BOGOTA, Colombia -- (AP) -- Rescued hostage Ingrid Betancourt says she still aspires ``to serve Colombia as president.''

Betancourt says she believes President Alvaro Uribe's 2006 re-election was ''very good for Colombia.'' She says she saw from her six-year jungle captivity that the military buildup he promoted had great effect in debilitating her rebel captors.

Betancourt was running against Uribe in 2002 when the rebels kidnapped her.

She told a news conference after her rescue Wednesday that Uribe ''has been a very good president'' but that ``I continue to aspire to serve Colombia as president.''

For now, she said, ``I'm just one more soldier.''

There was an article in La Semana titled "And Out Steps The Candidate". For those who read Spanish:

LOL, Jolie does look a bit like the pre-secuestro Ingrid so that's definitely possible! :-))

But what makes me laugh the most is that the Ingrid love-fest didn't even last 24 hours on PBH. Last night, she was "classy" as one poster put it. Now, everyone's going back to dogging her (and France) just like a few months back, there were several threads that EVISCERATED her! Talk about, ahem, "flip-flopping" ;-)

I have a funny feeling she may very well decide to spend a couple of years just being a MOTHER to her children. She's already lost so much, would she actually campaign and lose even more time away from her family? And if she does somehow win, which I grant is extremely unlikely, that would rule out even more quality time with the family. . .

Still, she does seem to have a bit of a "look at me, I'm so different/heroic/special" type of personality which got her into this mess in the first place!

I have nothing against Ingrid, but I wonder if all those saying how great she'd be as president even knew who she was before she was kidnapped, let alone supported her for president. I certainly respect her and feel very glad that she's been freed, but being a strong willed captive does not qualify her to be president. She was widely disliked in Colombia before her captivity. One would assume that her lack of popularity was due at least in part to her policies.

Desi, You say that you support the best candidate with the best platform. Do you support Ingrid for president? If so, what specific planks of Ingrid's platform incline you to do so, particularly those not directly related to the situation of the remaining hostages? This question also applies to others who claim to support her for president.

This is what I wrote about her in another thread, not that long ago. That explains a little of my political affinity with her.

She was not "widely disliked" in Colombia. When she was elected senator she got the highest voting count that far in Colombia.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Dec 1, 2007, 13:24

"Ok, so let's set some things straight to start with.
She's not just some frail, French girl. She's Colombian, with a double nationality, French-Colombian. Her father was stationed in Paris on an international assignment and she went to La Sorbonne and married a French diplomat (the father of her two children). Her dad was an ex-minister in Colombia and her mother is an ex-beauty queen Yolanda Pulecio.

She divorced from her French husband and moved back to Colombia to fight the political corruption in her country with some success. She became senator with the highest voting account in the Colombian history and started a political party, The Green Oxygen party and she was intrumental in bringing ex-president Samper to justice on accounts of corruption (he had received campaign contribution monies from the Cali Cartel)

She was a presidential candidate when she was kidnapped; she foolishly ventured into guerrilla country claiming the access for all Colombian territory being for every Colombian citizen. She made ONE huge mistake and has paid for it with five years of her life, her health and perhaps her sanity.

I have nothing but enormous respect and admiration for this courageous woman and anybody who wants to get to know her better please read her book: "Until Death Does Us Apart, My Struggle To Reclaim Colombia"

And I admired her for being so outspoken against gov't corruption which has always been a serious problem in Colombia, one that aggravates many of the other problems. She also didn't ignore the atrocities that were being committed by the paras like many other politicians, recognizing that ALL of the illegal armed groups (and drug cartels) were responsible for Colombia's instability. In addition, she was a critic of the US drug war in Colombia which focuses on spraying the crops of poor peasants creating the illusion that something is being done. She was absolutely right, the US policy towards Colombia with respect to drug cultivation was and is a complete failure. Is she presidential material...who in the hell knows? Quite frankly, I don't care if she runs for public office anywhere. I am simply happy that she has been afforded the opportunity to be reunited with her family and that Colombia is one step closer to solving one of its issues.

"She had a broad understanding of the issues that Colombia was/is facing"

Well if that’s all you need, that qualifies every PBH member to the Colombian Presidency (or at least that’s what they think)…Jajaja

Bravo, Presidente Uribe for the perfect operation!

I love all of the attention that I am receiving for supposedly arguing that she'd make a good president. Did I claim she'd make a good president or that she was electable?

Glad that you recognize that it is all in your head, tasco66...hopefully the others do as well.

A Little off topic but too good of an opening to pass up;

"but I was impressed by her years ago when she was in the Senate. Having said that, I am not at all certain that she would make a good president."

Sound like John McCain? LOL

chrispej says on Jul 4, 2008, 00:52:

Let's remember, there are still an estimated several hundred hostages held by the farc. Inbred running for president could cause a major loss of life. She needs to go away. Once the farc is gone then maybe she can run but now, she could potentially cause the death of many Colombians.

Like I said, there are some really, really pissed off people in Colombia right now.
