Betancourt gets French award at Bastille Day celebrations

President Nicolas Sarkozy has honoured freed French-Colombian hostage Ingrid Betancourt with France's highest award, the Legion of Honour. Betancourt, who spent six years in the hands of the FARC rebels of Colombia, was welcomed as a heroine in France after her release 10 days ago. She said she was counting on Sarkozy to help free the scores of other hostages believed to be held by FARC. The award was presented at the traditional Bastille Day celebrations in Paris. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was a guest of honour at the event attended by a host of world leaders who stayed on after the weekend's Mediterranean summit in the French capital.

"She said she was counting on Sarkozy to help free the scores of other hostages believed to be held by FARC."

Wonder if that will happen.

I still don't understand why she got this award. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that she did because she's bringing awareness about the people who are still kidnapped in the Colombian jungle. But besides being held captive against her will for over six years, is there anything she did to deserve this award?

I'm just asking. Maybe there's something I'm not getting.

I agree, but as been said before, usually such medals are reserved for heroic deeds for the country (which is really not even hers), not stupidly putting oneself into harms way, against prudent advice.

However, hopefully it does provide more awareness, and just maybe help getting freedom for those who remain. The French are probably done with their feeble attempts.

Was that the same thing Juanes got a few years ago? Or is it something else?

I don't know, but I really doubt it.

I think is the highest honor from France, like the U.S. Cogressional Medal of Honor.

Uhmm... sounds like the medal Juanes got.

Sorry mono, but the honor Juanes received, while still very impressive, is somewhat less important, than the Legion of Honour, which the highest honor France can bestow.

"After he became the first person to hold a concert before the European Parliament and was called the greatest envoy of his native Colombia, Latin rock star Juanes will also be decorated with the highest French artistic honor.

The order of knighthood that Juanes will receive on July 19 will be handed to him by the country's Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. The megastar will be dubbed Knight of Arts and Letters."

I see. I just wasn't sure about all the medals they give out. So Juanes got one for his music and Ingrid got a higher honor for... being kidnapped?

Sloopskipper, The highest civilian honor in the US is the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the highest military honor is the Congressional Medal of Honor. Usually I don't nitpick this much, but since many of the Medal of Honor recipients were killed in service, I think it's an important point to clarify.

I didn't really think of civilian awards. Do you know if Legion of Honour is civilian, military, or multi-purpose?

But, I think that "Ingrid got a higher honor for... being kidnapped".

Yep Sloop, that's about all the award is worth, the higher honor for stupidity, nothing else to show for.

The Legion of Honour is France’s highest award, given for services to the nation.

Now here are two good examples of services to the French nation: Jajajaja

The judge having pronounced in discretion the divorce of Cécilia and Nicolas Sarkozy received the Legion of honor. Just like Jacques Séguéla, who had organized the meeting with Carla Bruni!

F.V. LIBERATION.FR: Tuesday July 15, 2008

That Ingrid Betancourt receives hands of Nicolas Sarkozy the Legion of honor, one includes/understands. That Dany Boon is also pinned, why not. But when it is the judge who pronounced last October the divorce of the couple Cécilia - Nicolas Sarkozy, there, one enough. It s' acts of Nicole Choubrac. Still vice-president in charge of the family businesses to the Court of Bankruptcy of Nanterre a few days ago, she is recently installed with the TGI of Paris. “Nicolas Sarkozy obviously appreciated the professionalism of this gracious woman (…) but also its discretion, underlines Aujourd'hui in France/Le Parisien, which devotes an article to the subject. “I believe that (the President) appreciated that I n' in does not speak, reacts in the daily newspaper Nicole Choubrac. And God knows if the journalists m' solicited. The history (funny) does not stop there. Because in the promotion of July 14 of the Legion d' honor, Jacques Séguela is high with the rank of officer. It is him which had organized in its residence, little time after the divorce, the famous meal during which Nicolas Sarkozy had met Carla Bruni… Let us recall that the Legion of honor is highest French honorary decoration, supposed to reward the eminent merits returned to the Nation.
