Other options: I don´t know what Western Union charges but the cheapest for you might be giving her a US debit card the next time you see her. Obviously it would be one that you don´t need to use for yourself in the states. You just deposit and she withdraws from atms. Depending on the US bank the card is from the bank fees on a $260.00 (or $500.000 peso) atm withdrawal are around $3.

Buongone says on May 4, 2008, 19:06:

Try using an Ikobo debit card. Check them out at www.Ikobo.com They are cheaper than Western Union. Ikobo Inc. 1-866-800-4562.

www.citibank.com was free until early this year. Now it's 2% to use the card at an ATM or a retail outlet. I'd like to go back to free but don't know where to find it.

My wife and I are involved in the visa process right now.... I send her a little cash every few weeks, but I try to keep it a sane amount. We use Money gram. Its costs a flat $10 each time.. We thought about the ATM route, but fees vary so much, and if she loses the card, then she's screwed, so, for $10, I wire it in the morning, she has constructive use by the afternoon..

So, on a side note; some little sh** pulls up to her walking down the street, on his bike, and asked her for money.. She said, " no money". He said, 'gimme your cellular phone" She told him to F*** off...So, one are Colombian petty criminals REALLY that inept? and two, is it common in broad day light to have some dumb A** try to victimize you?- We are talking a nice barrio in North Bogota?

===================================================================

Happy Boy--when you say a "Sane Amount" I hope it really is sane and not like Hundreds,,,

On the "Nice barrio in North Bogota" a Colombian friend of mine who didn't give Papaya was taken for a pretty scary Cab Ride in the cab he caught across from the Santa Barbara Mall- a Very Nice area most would say. When he got into the Radio dispatched cab, another car zipped in behind his cab and two guys got in the back seat next to him on both sides so he knew he was in for trouble. And he called this Cab, it wasn't a random cab hailed from the street. The Driver later claimed he knew "Nothing" It was like 8 pm at night and they took him blindfolded down to the Railyard Switching Yard (south bogota) by where the Tourist train departs(not a place to be after the sun goes down) and after leading him from the car, stood him next to a Building nose first after they robbed him of what little he had on him. Told him not to move for 15 minutes or they would shoot him. Just goes to show even in nice areas you can get hit on and he was a Colombian born in Bogota, spoke Native spanish from Bogota, appeared not like a Gringo but the Triguena Complexion blackhaired browneyed Colombian he is in reality,,,And he was robbed here for the first time after traveling all over south america for 25 years as a Tech Rep for IBM so he was fairly street smart and not some Gringo giving Papaya on his maiden journey to Colombia. It was 2 blocks from his sister's house,,,

I send $175/month-never more than $75 at a time.. enough to pay her health insurance and cellular and a bit of spending money.. No more...I fly her up here every two months and if she needs things, I buy them here, I never send cash to her to buy clothes, or finance "family distress issues, etc. etc.We keep it simple and sweet and capped the dollar amount, the rest is up to her until the visa goes through.

Miamimike- that definitely opened my eyes! My time in Bogota has been surrounded by my family and we tend to only go out in larger groups, so I haven't really been exposed to the grittier side of Bogota and I was actually quite shocked, when she told me what happened. I expected more of what you discribed, rather than her version, so I thought that guy is going to starve as a criminal is he takes no for an answer.. DON'T GET ME WRONG! I am glad he did!!!

Atrevido says on May 5, 2008, 04:57:

You know come to think of it I regret my original response. Sending money to someone who isn´t family is a BAD idea. No Colombian would do it. You start that and you will never again know what the basis of her interest is: you or the money. You can be guarenteed it will poison the relationship. And then their was the case in Terron Colorado, Cali a few months ago where a gringo sent her money, the Colombian boyfriend found out about it, kidnapped her to extort the gringo and ended up killing her in Ginebra.

Jlove says on May 5, 2008, 06:11:

If you ahve to send money, Western Union can do it next day for 4 dollar from TX or 7 dollars to receive it in minutes. I also have a girlfriend waiting on her visa and I must agree with the other people, if you can avoid it. Once it starts, it is hard to control and it does poison your relationship to a degree. I have seen colombian girls change and become egoista and mad if you some day tell them no. If you have to help her, keep it as low as possible and the basics.

ummm..no. you haven't "been together over a year". you've nailed her 4 times on vacation. huge difference.

have you given any thought at all to - exactly what sort of woman would be comfortable taking money from a man she's seen four times?

puts me in mind of the old joke....

man approaches gorgeous woman and says "my god, you're beautiful! would you have sex w/ me for a million dollars?"

after a moment's thought, she agrees.

then the man says "how about for $50?"

incensed, she responds "$50?? what do you think i am?"

"we already established what you are - now we're just dickering on price.."

no insult to your girl intended...just a little food for thought.

Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab

Saltador says on May 5, 2008, 07:38:

slguy,
To play devils advocate I think you read that wrong, he's been to see her four different trips, could be a week or two each time, maybe he's nailed her twice a day (to make up for lost time) now you're talking nailing her maybe 80 times, not 4. Big difference. And maybe vale la pena.
In all seriousness, try xoom.com, just like Western Union but way cheaper.
ATM card works best of all. Open one with no transaction fees. Don't worry, she's not going to lose her ATM card. Would you lose the goose who laid the golden eggs?

rocinante says on May 6, 2008, 05:50:

Yeah a lot of the girls here get money and have other boyfriends here. Hell even the ones not getting money have boyfreinds. It's common.

Western Union is the absolute worst. $25 bucks to send $150 using a credit card over the web? That's outrageous.

Best way is to hook her up with a no fee ATM card that goes against a checking account. The checking account IS NOT ATTACHED to a second account: savings account which is also under your name. This means that if the check account has $50 and the sav has $2,000 and someone charges/withdraws $100 the check acc won't borrow from the savings account - as this would defeat the purpose of control. Deposit money in the savings, manually transfer to the checking from savings via PC from your home and this way you have control. This is what I do for my own personal withdrawls.

You get the best eschange rate, can go to ANY ATM in Colombia and if someone gets your card or takes you for a ride there is only a little bit available as most of the money is in the savings account which is not attached to the card.

I have two bank cards, from two different US banks with this scenario. It's good to have two in case you lose one and/or if you withdraw frequently as the banks only allow 4 transfers from Sav to Check per month.

IF you don't want to give an ATM card before the 3rd date look up Ria Envia. You have to go there in person and hand over the cash. But the fees are low low low.

brad, it seems you aren't gonna listen to any of us cynics, anyway, but i'm gonna share a little story with you..

a little over a year ago, i was in bogota visiting my then-girlfriend. she's a very accomplished, self-sufficient lady (who i was prolly an idiot to let get away) .

she wanted to trade cars, and had talked by phone with the dealership about the model she wanted, and the price. she asked if i would go with her to make the deal, knowing the advantage of having a guy there, vs. single woman. when we arrived, they bait/switched her a little, claiming to have sold the specific car she wanted, earlier in the day, but had this minimally upgraded model for about an extra US$800. she told them that she couldn't afford the extra $ just then, but that she'd return in 2-3 weeks, when she was due to collect a business payment (she's a realtor).

i knew she had her heart set on this new car, and while she didn't show it, was very disappointed - so i took her aside, and suggested loaning her the money, until her other money arrived. i had never seen this woman more than mildly perturbed - but the anger in her eyes at my offer could have peeled my skin off. i was...mystified.

when she finally spoke to me again, hours later, she said (more or less) "if/when you're my husband, your offer is appropriate. until then, NEVER insult me in this manner again. i am NOT your puta!"

classy lady. get my point, brad? ;)

billyb says on May 6, 2008, 12:29:

jajaj, I see it now Rubi. Must be true then. The basic rule to follow is, what would you think about a woman in the US, or Europe asking you to support her family after one or two in-person meetings (if any at all), would you be so willing to part with your money then? Or would you suspect that you are some how being taken for the fool?

Rubito says on May 6, 2008, 12:35:

Yup. The girls play off of the gringos' silly fucking stupid fantasies about just how rough it is in Colombia and how nobody could EVER manage to support themselves let alone get ahead without a little help from the Great White Man and his deep pockets.

I guess I won the lottery. I sent my gf then wife $100 to $200 dollars per month over the course of the 27 months it took us to sort out her visa and relation ship.

Six years later we are still married. The two year magic green card dump the gringo time line has come and gone. Our three year old daughter is a joy to us both.

Go for the gusto!

Not all women from Colombia are hookers. Lighten up.

ok then, the dawg's other name is the Exception. I have heard many success stories. I do wonder what the actual stats are, but we will never know.

Everybody has been played, and we have all played, but hopefully, with experience, and luck, everybody can find someone to enjoy spending their lives together with.

Rubito says on May 6, 2008, 21:18:

If we are talking sending the gf money on a monthly basis, I'd say it's not even 50/50 that the relationship is real and two-sided. If we're talking sending money monthly to a girl you've never met IRL much less actually had sex with that does down to maybe 1 in 100 or less :P

---Violence is the price of freedom.---

christobeldawg says on May 6, 2008, 21:21:

agreed Rubito

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

christobeldawg says on May 6, 2008, 21:24:

When I was first gettin my feet wet, I met a girl through the internet, who lived in Manizales. I, an idiot, told her that I would meet her in Bogota. She asked for the money for her flight. I am thinking, what about the money for my flight to Bogota, but anyway, I told her that she could take the bus. She seemed not so interested in the dawg anymore.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

Rubito says on May 6, 2008, 21:36:

I had a Dominicana take a bus from Montreal to Toronto on her own dime to hang with me for some days back in the day and she STILL tried to pull the scams on me while she was there. Fortunately I had some friends who were really just like gold in those days when I was still getting my feet wet on Spanish-speaking culture. They let me know exactly what she was going to try and how she was going to try it and they were spot on. I sent the bitch packing :P

---Violence is the price of freedom.---

billyb says on May 7, 2008, 06:48:

Dawggie, that filter of asking her to take the bus probably saved you a lot of grief and gave you a chance to look around and make the right choice.

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 06:53:

The "filter" may have worked, but how many of us would ride a bus for eight hours one way to meet some anonymous person from a foreign country that we met on the internet? I wouldn't and I wouldn't ask my "pen pal" to do the same. I think if people are going to use the internet to find DECENT dating prospects, they better have some serious vacation time and a fair amount of money on hand.

billyb says on May 7, 2008, 07:00:

If there was "something" there, maybe. If Jessica Alba sent me bus fare to meet her in LA, I would be there in a heartbeat.

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 07:05:

True... I get your point. However, I wouldn't immediately cast someone as a grifter if they said they needed money for a plane ticket to meet me. If the other person is not financially independent, those requests shouldn't surprise me.

christobeldawg says on May 7, 2008, 07:06:

but BillyB, this right choice has not sent me any money yet.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

billyb says on May 7, 2008, 07:08:

Not even bus fare?

billyb says on May 7, 2008, 07:09:

Tinto, I see your point on her not wanting to take the bus,(who would for dawggie), but he stated that she also lost interest in him.

goin_south says on May 7, 2008, 07:13:

send her the dough and TELL HER TO WALK ANYWAY! jaj

why can't the freakin Chung King Chinese just LEAVE THE FREAKN DOLLY LLAMA and Tibet ... ALONE!

Rubito says on May 7, 2008, 07:18:

Yeah but Tinto if you're already paying for a plane ticket to go most of the way down there and she can't come up with a means of getting a couple cities over in Colombia, that's pretty one-sided. Just because she's Colombian doesn't mean she has a great excuse for being a deadbeat! This isn't the freaking Sudan we are talking about here.

---Violence is the price of freedom.---

Tinto (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 07:25:

Rubito - To play Devil's Advocate (reckless without more known variables), what if the woman suspects Christobeldawg is coming to Bogota and using it as a base to meet all kinds of women from all over the region/country? There are some guys who do exactly that. So regardless of what's "fair" from a financial aspect, if she has self-respect and/or values her time, she wouldn't schlep over the mountains for eight hours, be asked/expected to shack up with a stranger on night one, and maybe get the boot the very next day if he thinks she isn't the one. So it's back to the bus for eight more hours. Doesn't sound very appealing to me.

Like I said, too many unknown variables. Christobeldawg might be a prince and the woman in question might be a ho. Or she's the Virgin Mary and he's Don Juan just down for a week of chasing tail (the paid and unpaid kind). Whatever the case, if someone can get one of these relationships off the ground and sustain it, my hat's off to them. I think it's fair to say the work involved, the commitment and the trust is higher than in "normal" relationships with the girl or boy next door.

Rubito says on May 7, 2008, 07:55:

Fine, BUT it has to be a little less than completely one-sided or the relationship has ZERO chance no matter what.

As far as I'm concerned BOTH parties have ample reason to be suspicious so that cancels that out.

at Chisto, IMHO she is not your "girl next door" if she is asking for money without even knowing you, and even if you did, she is not your fiancee or wife. Avoid her if you can.

Wow - this thing is still alive? I already forget who the OP handle was...

Forget the country she is from and her beauty etc... In general, do you typically send money to your Novia's? If yes...as Dr Phil would put it "How did that work out for you?"

My point is that many times members here help others make these types of decisions based on using your current baseline experience. Yes, yes...there are exceptions to every rule...but rare.

ooops! ....Did I say that?
