Best way to go (K1) How long from day 1 to entry?

For all of you that dont know me, I am a 21 year old male working over seas in afghanistan and Iraq as a DOD contractor. I have never posted in the VISA section...... But I have been dating a girl in colombia for a year now and want to continue to date her for another year before we tie the knot, but would like to get the K1 process going depending on how long it takes

1. How long from day one filling out the paper
2. If going through a firm and not doing it your self what is the cost?
3. Which way would you recommend doing it, your self or through a service.
4. Once she gets to the states on this visa and you get married withthin the 90 days, after that what happens? Does she have to go back to colombia until you fill out more paper work, or can she stay in the states while all this is going along.
5. Someone who has been in my shoes, what way was the easiest for you?

I am not in a rush to get this done, I am in Iraq right now and just want to make sure i get the paper work started in time to try and have her living in the states with me before January 2009, is this possible? I was reading about assets and income and everything, is this important in getting her papers passed through. I have about 125K as of today in the bank. Should I apply while I am over seas making 9k a month so when I go home it doesnt become a problem that I am back to working and making regular pay like a normal american. Thank you for all your advice in advance.

Hey Bama - how was your visit last month?

Ok, question 1. It depends. But, the average time from initial filing to the visa being granted is 7 months. It sometimes happens quicker, especially if your service center is Vermont, but generally, plan on it being 7 or 8 months. If you do everything perfect, and with a little luck, 6 months is not out of the question.

Question 2. Do it yourself. I hired a very cheap attorney, and the only mistakes made were due to the attorney. Average cost for an attorney is $2000 plus, and all they will do is fill out paperwork for you, have you sign it, and send it away. If you need help in the process, visajourney.com spells everything out. I found that site a little overwhelming, so if the same thing happens to you, PM me, and I will be glad to help you out. Others here helped me this last year, and I would be glad to pass on my first hand knowledge.

Question 3. Answer, see answer to question 2.

Question 4. Once your future bride gets to the States, you are correct in that you will have to get married within 90 days. You also then have to file your (her) adjustment of status within the 90 days. As long as you guys get hitched and file the AOS paperwork, she does not have to leave, and actually can't leave without being considered an abandonment case and thus will be denied re-entry into the US. So, to answer your answer concisely: No, she doesn't have to leave.

Question 5. The K1 was definitely the best option for us. The tough part is the wait and the stress. But you can do it. You said your not in a hurry, so it seems ideal for you.

As far as your income, her income, etc., don't worry about it. You are WAY beyond the minimum requirements. She isn't required or even asked for income level. You have to show you make 125% of the poverty rate in the US for 2 people (assuming she is child-free). That is $18,000 right now my friend. You will fill out an affidavit of support during the process in which you will have to prove your income. But, with your savings and current income level, you got no worries.

Good luck. Good to see you back on the board. Stay safe. Rob

Thanks bro, That was a big help..........Well I really enjoyed my self actually, the young lady I have been seeing really took care of me when I was down there, we are both 21 years old so it really makes me feel comfortable, I really enjoy being with her........ everyone tells me that I am young and shouldnt worry about marriage and what not, but if they look at it like I do, I am happy, I cant say ok, she doesnt want me for citizenship or to make it to the states and disapear on me......... But i know by personal time with her that it is different.......Its not like we cant communicate, she speaks better english then most people on this website and is educated........I dont care, I am happy and that is all that is important, does your colombian wife live with you in the states? How does she like it, this will be a big change, I mean she isnt from a poor part of medellin or anything Laurles use to be really nice and still is peaceful place, but how did your wife take the change........was it a hard transition......

Please anyone else who has information, respond to my posting with your personal advice......
