So they posed this question in Mexico section but since that area is more deserted the San Jose de Guaviare these days lets bring it here.

I mean, the FARC learned their kidnapping tactics from those euros Pizarro and Cortez, but at least they release some of their hostages when the ransom is payed, as opposed to the traditional european custom of killing the hostage after it is payed (see Atahualpa).

Tinto (Moderator) says on Jul 18, 2008, 12:13: In my admittedly limited reading of history, I don't think Colombia was milked dry to the extent Bolivia, Peru or Mexico were by colonial powers or foreign mining companies. First, Colombia did not possess large, easily accessible quantities of gold, silver, tin, zinc and lead and second, a fair amount of the gold mining was centered in and around Antioquia, it wasn't all that active until the late 1800s, and it was a local business. Ultimately that small-scale mining provided a lot of capital and technical know-how that made Medellin a regional industrial power today.

I know I heard my father-in-law talking about it several times, how after they found gold in the rivers of Chocó and the blacks were panning small about every day, the minig rights were given to a US company that brought machinery and cleaned the rivers of what gold they posessed. You can still find small gold nuggets in the sands of those rivers, but it's just occasional. "When shall we three meet again? And it's a very highly credited source. "When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?"(First Witch in Macbeth) 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

billyb says on Jul 18, 2008, 12:43: Kernow, about a year ago I sent you a link to the article that talked about the Cornish miners in the late 19th century in Colombia in a special issue of Semana. Do you want me to try and find it again? It talked about how in some of those former mining villages, there are still some paisa families with Cornish last names.

billyb says on Jul 18, 2008, 12:49: I don't know what that article proves, beyond that there are foreign owned mines in Colombia. and more importantly, what does it have to do with flags ;)

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jul 18, 2008, 13:03: It proves that that US mining companies have been exploting Colombian gold deposits in Chocó for 100 years at least....which proves my point to ad nauseaum and shows that you can throw as many glib remarks on my way as you'd like and I can still prove my point with factual information, not just off-hand remarks. Tinto (Moderator) says on Jul 18, 2008, 13:20: Desi, I wouldn't go so far as to say US companies have been in that region for at least 100 years, because that may not be true on a continuous basis.

billyb says on Jul 18, 2008, 14:19: We can paste all the articles we like, but that doesn't obscure my main point, that you took a gratuitous cheapshot at the US and you were called on it, and now you are trying to throw anything against the wall to see what sticks in hopes of side tracking that main point.
