Best looking Flag? La bandera mas bonita?

So they posed this question in Mexico section but since that area is more deserted the San Jose de Guaviare these days lets bring it here.

Patriotism removed which flag do you think is the best one?

Here are my choices:

That's just what I was thinking, dwmte. All of the smaller stripes on the USA flag make it stand out more. And I think the union jack looks pretty cool too.

Around her hair she wore a yellow ribbon...

The mexican flag is the best looking, but without the drawing in the middle... ;)
Second choice is the European flag.

Sloop, the Italian navy flag is almost like the Mexican flag, it has something in the middle too.
When I was living on my sailboat, I had a friend from Italy visiting. He is a patriotic bold guy, like Simon, and gave me a big flag to put on my boat as present.
So, he puts the flag on the pole and every morning I go, talking about one of the neighbor sailboat in the bay:
"Hey, Mauro, good morning. They ask if we are Mexican...".

About Colombian gold and other national resources....

"This region has never stopped being the target of rulers, businessmen and multinationals. The wealthy classes of Colombia, especially those of Cauca, Valle and Nariño have always associated their interests to those of foreign capitals. The enormous riches hidden in its midst (forests, oil, fishing, mining...), its great biodiversity, and its geographic setting, all give this area a high degree of importance. The British and the Americans have always been there from the 19th century, extracting fine woods, rubber, gold, etc. and making multiple studies toward the quantification of resources and all kinds of possibilities. Raw Materials

Colombia has important deposits of the following natural resources: Petroleum, Nickel, Gold, Natural Gas, Iron ore, Silver, Coal, platinum, Emeralds.

In order to be able to exploit or mine Colombian fossil and mineral natural resources, a national concession is required. Generally the control of prospectors is assumed by INGEOMINAS. In order to obtain the searching and production rights, a fee of about 70% of the extraction value has to be paid. In most cases, raw materials are extracted with the aid of foreign companies, who have access to the necessary technical and financial means. Foreign investments occur through international bids, which are subject to the supervision of the Mining Ministry

About oil and coal....
"Oil exploitation rights belong to the state owned company ECOPETROL, one of the most important buyers of European machinery, installations and pipelines. Taking into account Ecopetrol´s profits (1998: about 3.1 billions US dollars) and its number of employees (10.500). Ecopetrol is one of the most important Colombian enterprises.

However, Ecopetrol exploits not all oil fields. Many foreign companies have acquired rights"

"The “Cerrejon Norte coal deposit in the Guajira was tapped at a cost of about 3.6 billions US Dollars. Coal resources amount it three million tons, which partially lie deep down at 300 m below the surface. In 1996 the “Cerrejon Norte production accounted for 60% of the national production,. The American company EXXON and the states owned company CARBOCOL are partners in the Cerrejón norte mine. Each company owns 50% of the project. New deposits are tapped by CARBOCOL, and they assure that nor only US technology is desired to develop these new deposits.

I mean, the FARC learned their kidnapping tactics from those euros Pizarro and Cortez, but at least they release some of their hostages when the ransom is payed, as opposed to the traditional european custom of killing the hostage after it is payed (see Atahualpa).

I'm all for nationalizing the main raw materials and resources or if that's not feasable, cutting down on the profits made by foreign investment in favour of national production, until the country has infrastructure and economy that is up to par with the first world industrialized nations.

But what I was just ponting out here was that I was not so much off the mark saying that national resources are being, have been and unfortunately, looks like they also will be exploited by multinational companies and foreign investment. I didn't say that "we Euros" havent done that are not doing that, I think I mentioned "Spaniards" in the first place. And we are talking JUST about Colombia, Colombia's national resources, not Angola, Sri Lanka or mining rights on Mars. That's all, billyb.

A lot of the information above is getting pretty old. Exxon, for example, is no longer involved in Cerrejon coal and the petroleum laws, the natural resources agencies and the ownership of Ecopetrol have all had significant changes.

When it comes to metals extraction (precious and non-precious) I believe the the biggest players in Colombia are British, Australian, Swiss, South African and Canadian. I don't think US miners had, or have, a comparable Colombian or global footprint. We don't need no stinkin' gold, the streets are already paved with it. He-he.

In my admittedly limited reading of history, I don't think Colombia was milked dry to the extent Bolivia, Peru or Mexico were by colonial powers or foreign mining companies. First, Colombia did not possess large, easily accessible quantities of gold, silver, tin, zinc and lead and second, a fair amount of the gold mining was centered in and around Antioquia, it wasn't all that active until the late 1800s, and it was a local business. Ultimately that small-scale mining provided a lot of capital and technical know-how that made Medellin a regional industrial power today.

I've been trying to find info about the US mining operations in Chocó at the turn of the century...that is, last century). I know I heard my father-in-law talking about it several times, how after they found gold in the rivers of Chocó and the blacks were panning small about every day, the minig rights were given to a US company that brought machinery and cleaned the rivers of what gold they posessed. You can still find small gold nuggets in the sands of those rivers, but it's just occasional.

Minera Chocó Pacífico S. A., Frontino Gold Mines Ltda., Pato Consolidated S.A., Novita Mines Corporation, Cía. Promotora Colombiana S. A., Mineros Ltda., y Pacific Metals Corporation.

Desi, I wouldn't go so far as to say US companies have been in that region for at least 100 years, because that may not be true on a continuous basis.

Here's something from the NY Times of 1919 (click on the embedded .pdf). Ownership of mines changed frequently and one or more of the companies referenced in your post above had British, American and South African money. No surprise since mining is an ancient, and perhaps one of the first truly global, industries. Other sources put the French and the Belgians in the Choco region in the late 1800/early 1900s, too.
