Best Ideas for Travel Outside Bogota

My brother and a friend are visiting me in Bogota the first week of August. He would like to travel outside of Bogota, but wants an activity filled trip, not just sitting on the beach. Of the top of my head, I think the Amazon, San Gil, and maybe Tayrona would all work nicely.

Anyone else have any good ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

I can recommend to go to the Amazon. There are several jungle lodges along the Rio Yavarí which forms the border between Peru and Brazil. It is not quite cheap, but certainly an unforgettable experience. With a bit of luck you can watch the pink dolphins there. Other activities are bird watching, fishing, jungle walks, caiman watching, canoa trips. In Leticia, there is the possibility to do canopying. The lodges offer packages that include accomodation, transport from and to Leticia by boat, food, and activities.

Other trips that are interesting are Bahía Solano (whale watching, but season starts in August), San Agustín, Capurganá, or maybe La Guajíra. There are so many things to do in Colombia.

If all you have is a week I would suggest you follow your post. If that is two weeks throw in Cartagena and Bogotá. You will be in Bogotá initially so start there. I would seriously suggest you call Avianca and price out their "Discover Colombia" air pass which is good for thirty days.

I recently posted a similar question, check here for some ideas: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/bogota---day-trip-ideas/

Also, on my own, i've down some research, because like you I will be in Bogota for a week and wanted to get away to do some "adventure" stuff.. i found the following two websites in my research:

Day trips to Tobia from Bogota for rafting, canyoning, etc.. check out this website: http://somosaventureros.com/home.htm

I also found information on San Gil that would be awesome, but since we're only going to be there a week and it takes 5-7 hours by bus to get there from Bogota, I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend two days traveling.. but it definitely looks like a fun option.. check out there site at: http://www.sangil.com.co/

good luck.. and let me know how it went when you come back as I will be going in November
