Best hotels in Bogota and Medellin

What are the best hotels to stay for 1-2 nights? My mother is terminally ill with a short time to live and I desperately hope she can visit Colombia before she dies. Obviously we will spend most of the time in the countryside to see the nature reserves (especially El Dorado above Santa Marta which is one of the nicest places in Colombia IMO, I am amazed Pete has not put a review of it on this site) but we need somewhere really nice to stay in Bogota and Medellin. No point in anything very ostentatious, but would like somewhere very nice with character and excellent service. Money no object though don't want to spend for the sake of it. Any ideas?

No answers to your questions, but all my best to you guys. I think that is so cool your mom is going to Colombia with you. Treasure every moment. Hope you have a great time - hang in there.

Actually, if price isn't a factor - book a room at the Intercontinental Tequendama in Bogota. First class all the way. If a dignitary from another country visits Bogota, generally, that is where they stay. I stayed there a few nights a year or two ago. It is a fantastic location. Easy walk to Candalaria, smack dab in Bogota centro. La zona rosa is about a 10 minute taxi ride if traffic isn't terrible. It is a 5 minute taxi ride to the base of the mountain to go up to Monserate.

The Tequendama is in a very good location but is getting a little "long in the tooth" IMHO.
The Hotel La Fontana or the Sofitel Bogota Victoria Regia, both these are on the north end and the Sofitel is down the street and around the corner from where we live. If you want to be in the center of the historic district I can recommend, without hesitation, the Hotel De La Opera

There is a good list here: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/travel/MedellinGuide/ and here: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/travel/BogotaGuide/

What type of hotel are you looking for, plus how expensive?

Poor but snappy

Intercontinental Teq is a nice but not a very atmospheric place to stay - - i.e. it's like so many other concrete, glass, and carpet hotels all over the world. Lacks some character. I'd definitely rather go with Hotel de la Opera or with Abadia Colonial - - both more mid-priced but central to La Candelaria. Here's the link to Abadia Colonial: http://abadiacolonial.com.

I loved Apart-Hotel Hill House at Usaquen. Quiet and nice place to stay in. I think they only have 10 rooms and the price isn't bad at all.

The Charleston Hotel is right next to the Sofitel in the Northern part of Bogota near the Zona Rosa and also extremely nice.

If you want to stay in the "historic" part of Bogota then I'd whole heartedly go with Gator's recommendation of Hotel de la Opera.

We stayed at El Poblado in Medellin. $75.00 per day. Executive suite with computer and a chef cooked breakfast bar.

The InterContinental Medellin is the El Poblado residential area, verry safe,on the side of a mountain, about five k from downtown and three very upscale shopping malls are close by. The malls San Deigo , Oviado, and .El Tesoro. We usually bunk with friend but have stayed her several times.

Bogotá? Would have to go with the Hotel La Fontana or Embassy Suites Hotel , Las Rosales both on the north end(a ton of restaurants, coffee sops, malls and discos in the area) or the Hotel De La Opera in he historic district (La Candelaria)
