Best city to go

Hi, I'm originally from Queens, NY currently living and working in Buenos Aires (I've been here for about a year and a half) and I'm thinking of going to Colombia in May (I've never been there before). I would like to do volunteer work for 3 months and then if i like it and see that there are job opportunities, possibly stay for a longer period.

I'm between Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. Which is the best place to go during May-August months? Where would you recommend?

My general interests are basically cool people, beautiful women, salsa, merengue, reggueton, jazz, great restaurants and nice weather. I guess basically after living in Buenos Aires for all this time - I'm looking for something more "latin".

I appreciate any suggestions..

Thanks!!

The toll booths at Los Cedros on the road from Monteria to Puerto Escondido. You can't miss 'em. It's a swinging scene. Watch out for the pigs.

Bogota is hands down is the worst place in Colombia to visit.

Only when juancho00 is in town. Thanks it is not too often so Bogotá most of the time is the best place in Colombia not only to visit but to stay.

Drucifer, i've never personally been to Bogota but it is the capital of the country so it would be a safe bet to say Bogota has far more opportunities (work wise) than the other mentioned cities, however if your looking for something more "latin" Cartagena is the place to go.

Medellin is the best for you, BETTER WOMEN, better weather, cheaper then Bogota, better transportation, friendlier people Feria de las Flores in August, better services then Bogota (Electricity, Water, etc), great restaurants and BETTER WOMEN! Bogota is cold, traffic sucks, transportation sucks, expensive.

My two biggest hang-ups with Bogota are: #1) weather. Some people like it. I do not. But I can appreciate why people do like it. Bogota is great if you like highs in the 60s with rain almost everyday. There are exceptions of course, but generally that is what Bogota is. #2) traffic. My best comparison might me downtown Miami or Atlanta - maybe Chicago. The traffic congestion in Bogota at certain times is world class.

However, I can think of way more positive things about Bogota than the negatives. The prices are more expensive in Bogota for about everything. That might be my last negative. There are a million things to do in Bogota. I wouldn't even know where to start on the positives. It is much easier to come up with the few negatives. Truth be told, I am with Kat1, and I like Villavicencio much better. But that is just me.

kat's pulling your wank...bogota sucks. cartagena is dirty and the hustle never ends. but if you want to feel colombia as colombia is and can be, go to medallo. visit her surrounds, you'll never regret it.

Medellin is indeed a great city. But it is true that the paisas can be a little egotistical. Everyone feels obliged to point out the great climate and wonderful people, which are true, but exist elsewhere in Colombia. I note even Peter and Scooby (some time ago) wrote missives on why paisas are so great, so the campaign seems to be working well. I met a lot of paisas I liked a lot. I do not know if they live up to the hype though, they are astute business people and will take advantage of you as much as you let them. On occasion, I have let a select few paisas take advantage of me, I suppose. ;)

Not only paisas take advantage of the "gringo"... most Colombians do also. Medellin is by far the best city in Colombia, the only thing its missing is a beach.

That's true. I like Bogota and Medellin for different reasons. Colombians might take advantage of you if you let them, so don't let them!

Cartagena has a big dose of Afro to it. I would never call it the most Latin of the three cities. It's probably the least.

Suggest you check both Bogota and Medellin. Give them a week each, and then decide where to lay your hat. Maybe hit Bogota first, then head over to Medellin, since I suspect you are going to prefer Medellin and in that case you could just stay on.

que nota!

if any of you posters are passing through d. beach thinking you're on your way to cartagena, give me a call or an e...you'll feel right at home...sancocho, frijoles, chicharon, etc. you bring the ron medellin. open door policy here.

Cali has a beach, albeit at 2,5 hour's drive and 3 hours speedboat from B/ventura. Guerrilla on the Pacific side of the cordillera, paracos and farcenos at the port, malaria, dengue and common hoodlums in the streets. But they dance a nice currulao.
