Best budget eateries in Bogota? Love empanadas :-) Tamales :-)

I had a great Pizza at "1969 Gourmet Pizza"....45 st and Septima...starting 13,000 for medium size (8 portions pizza)

Had good lunch for about 5,000 pesos at "Patna" Parilla Bar at Carrera 16 #76
Great service and modern place

one of my favourites: el carnal. It's a fast mexican food chain. Whatever you do, don't get the quesadillas, they are horrible. But the 8k burrito (I forget exactly what they call it) will give you your week's supply of greasy, filling fat. (I'm thinking, seriously, that they call one of those fat burritos the 'gringa'...it never occurred to me before what that might mean..hmmm)

Also, go anywhere near la Javeriana university (or any other uni I imagine) at lunchtime and you'll find dozens of hole in the wall places selling fast, cheap food, drink and dessert included. for under 5k.

Pod I don't like the food they serve in El carnal.... and yes they called it "gringa"...

If anyone would like to taste some mexican food in bogota, you should try "el museo del tequila" a little bit pricey though... Pod El carnal is very famous isn't it??

Empanadas in the chapinero area, I don't remember the name of the place but my God!!! those are real empanadas!

I have never been to El Carnal, for mexican and spanish food its always good to wait for the mexican/spanish season at hotels. The best mexican food ive had in Colombia was during the mexican season in Tequendama but thats certainly not cheap.
For the odd quesadilla I often go to La Taqueria, its simple, not too pricey and they do yummy frozen margaritas.

but my love in La Taqueria the only good thing they have is la salsa verde and las margaritas... and tortillas, quesadillas there are not real quesadillas eaten in mexico....

In La Taqueria they have "their" own version of mexican food....

hey gabo! You're right, it's not fine dining, that's for sure, more like unhealthy, cheap filler for students, who make up probably 98% of the clientele. But, sometimes I like or even need something like that. And at least you can get it picante.

Anyway I think the poster wanted fast/cheap, not higher end?

Food at museo del tequila is pretty good. And they used to have the most beautiful hostess I have ever seen...she was worth going to see, forget the food.

oh I forgot that you're part mexican right gabo? Well, sure, el carnal is probably horrible compared to what you are used to. But I'd still go there to ease that hangover...

Amado mio I am afraid I couldnt eat real Mexican food. Mexican and Indian cuisine are amongst the best in the world and theyre off limits for me...I cant eat anything spicy, salty, full of carbs, or too bitter, although sometimes I cheat but that usually ends up at the doctor's office or just very badly.

off topic sorry: gabo, do you (or your mom) know of a good mexican place here in BsAs? I have been to a few that are ok, not great (el cielito lindo, xaranga)

I had a chicken mole in xaranga, it was almost inedible. Nothing like the ones I had in Mexico.

well yes pod.. i'm part mexican since i was born here but I was raised in Colombia more than in Mexico or in Argentina....

I have lived only 7 years of my life here, considering that the first 2 years of my life I lived in mexico...

and yes, i dont' like El carnal food that much but when I have no money left and I am in need of mexican food i go there too... I always have agua de horchata... my favorite, so there i go for my agua de horchata embotellada.. so yes El carnal has saved me when I need some mexican food as well

=D

I have been to Museo de Tequila in the Zona Rosa which has gret music and great Mexican food. The food at El Carnal is sustaining and they do have a lot of different sauces. I like Yucatecan food and that is harder to find, I think.

Well pod actually my mom does not eat mexican food, she hates spicy things... she is more colombian than bandeja paisa jajajajajajaja

but no, unfortunately I haven't had the chance to eat mexican food in a restaurant in BsAs...

However the mexican independence day is coming, and the mexican embassy organizes some gastronomic and cultural events... i have attended to some of those events and believe me you will taste a mole like if you were in oaxaca... sad that you are not here otherwise I would invite you to have a delicious mole at my best friend's place, her mom prepares a mole mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm DELICIOUS!!!!

in case you come to Mexico sometime in the future let me know and I'll invite you to taste her mole...

"yucatecan food" is also harder to find in Mexico City, we could say that if you want to eat yucatecan food you have to go to Yucatán... jejejejejejeje

hola monita!

thanks gabo, I'll have to get to mexico city one of these days, I keep reading all about cool restaurants that are opening there, seems like a lot of interesting design/architecture/gastronomy is going on.

Ajiaco: there is a chain in Bogota, sopa de mi abuela or something like that, and it seems to be popular, but I thought it was the worst ajiaco I had anywhere. My friend had soncocho, uggghhh. Don't go there!

Speaking of Ajiaco, Sancocho y otras sopas...what are the best places to get good soup in Bogota?

webmanco says on Aug 16, 2007, 11:46:

I like mexican food, there are several in Bogotá, La Taqueria on Pepe Sierra is a little pricey for me. There is a nice little Mexican corner house in La Candelaria near Universidad la Salle.

There are many Mexican restaurants in Bogotá, another nice one is in La Castellana.

Good soups are found about in every little restaurant in Bogotá. But for ajiaco and sancocho you might try Las Acacias, La Vieja Antioquía, among others
