You should start with finding out how to spell the name of the country of the person you met....it's ColOmbia!!

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

minina says on Nov 5, 2007, 13:35:

Well, I guess is Bello, Antioquia, Colombia? Isn't it. I don't know if there is a little town called Bello.

Bello is a part of Medellin's area Metropolitana but is not considered a part of the city itself. It has some very good neighborhoods , some bad. People are the same as in Medellin.

I did a search on Bello and found several different post. Type in Bello above in the google search.

"Simon is right before you can explore a country / city you need to spell it correctly."

Why? Who gives a damn if the spelling is wrong. I'm pretty sure there is no spelling test at immigration. Sheesh, some folks are WAY short of something to complain about about....

And by the way, "Columbia" is FAR more widely used in english, for more than just the capitol of South Carolina, than Colombia, so for folks that are just being exposed to the country, is a very easy mistake to make. When most folks in latin countries stop referring to New York as "Nuevo York", maybe they can start being more picky with spelling mistakes.

My point is, in the scheme of things, it's only spelling. Why not just welcome newbies, instead of jumping them for mistakes that are VERY easy to make?

First of all it is a BIG difference when a language writes and spells a name in a different way, as when it is an actual mispelling.

In french----->Colombie, they write it and spell it that way , it is the way of their language
In german----->Kolumbia see above.

Since in english Colombia it is spelled the same way as spanish, we will like people to at least try to get that right.

And you cannot compare the people who call New York, Nueva York....why? because "Nueva York" is the correct form to write it and spell it in spanish.

Would you say that somoneon who calls London, Londres is wrong?
or Lisbon, Lisboa or Prague, Praga and so on and so forth.

By the way webmanco it's spelled "Niquia".

slguy says on Nov 5, 2007, 21:53:

Ok - you guys asked for it.

Let’s examine the two words “Colombia"? and “Columbia"?:

“Colombia"? is the Spanish name for “land of Christopher Columbus"? (Cristobal Colón) and refers to a VERY, VERY short list of things in this big world:

Republic of Colombia (the country at issue in South America)
Greater Colombia a former country that does not exist now
Colombia, Nuevo Leon a planned community in Mexico
Colombia, Huila a town and municipality in Colombia
Colombia, Cuba, a municipality in Las Tunas, Cuba

Considering the very limited use of the word “Colombia"? worldwide, it’s no wonder that its unusual spelling gets plowed under terribly in everyone’s minds (except Colombians themselves, of course).

On the other hand, the rival spelling “Columbia"? has massive applications across the board that pretty much obliterate the alternative spelling of the word.

“Columbia"? is the first popular and poetic name for the United States of America; it is also the origin of the name for the District of Columbia, the federal district which is coextensive with the U.S. capital, Washington. “Columbia"? is a feminine form derived from Christopher Columbus, who is generally considered to have discovered the New World upon first visiting the Americas in 1492, the moniker dates from before the American Revolution in 1776 but fell out of use in the early 20th Century.

Check out the absolute vastness of the use of the word “Columbia":

So there you have it. “Columbia"? absolutely overwhelms to the point that “Colombia"? is hard to remember as an alternative spelling. Colombia is all but obliterated by the massive application of its rival word Columbia.

Here's the explanation, for whoever said that Colombia is the proper spelling in english. (Sorry- I just couldn't help myself!)

Actually, a friend of mine on another board who DOES have a lot of time on his hands did the heavy lifting on that post, after he was accosted by yet another overly-sensitive colombiano on another board about the spelling - I just copied it here. He's a cruising sailor, currently in Cartagena. He's an ex-attorney. Can you tell? LOL

Since Colombia uses the most obscure spelling in english, maybe Colombia should change the spelling ;), or you guys who are soooo ridiculously touchy about spelling the name properly should quietly accept that sometimes people who have not yet been accosted about spelling the name properly will occasionally make a VERY easy error, and lighten up on all these newbies who forget to use the obscure spelling.

You want people to love and respect your country- but tell them not to go there unless they spell the friggin name correctly? Ever occurred to you spelling nazis that you're giving your beloved country a black eye with this silly behavior, right out of the chute?

It's not just norteamericanos that make the Colombia/Columbia mistake. I have two friends, both of whom speak Spanish as a first language, that repeatedly misspelled the name of our beloved South American nation until I could bear no more and corrected them. One is Puerto Rican so perhaps we can forgive that, but the other is from the country just south of "Columbia." Yes, that's right, an Ecuadorean kept calling Colombia "Columbia."

Near Bello, there is Copacabana another municipio where tradition is that in November "Día de las animas" a guy goes to the cementery to talk to the dead, and goes with a bell walking and calling the deadth

Only in México they do celebrate "El día de las animas" as in Copacabana Antioquía, Colombia

In Copacabana I went to Las tres cruces and then to eat sanchocho and went to the pool.
