Peter (Moderator) says on Jul 31, 2007, 11:15: It's a town outside of the center of Medellin, but part of Medellin. It's cheaper than Medellin itself. It's not very poor, but not rich either, so between middleclass and poor I'd say. Poor but snappy 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Peter (Moderator) says on Aug 1, 2007, 03:47: 2/3 is lower middle, indeed. Not necessarily bad, but not upscale either. Poor but snappy 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

famsearch says on Aug 1, 2007, 21:32: you're right about that peter. where she lived wasn't the rock bottom, but not the top end either. i'd say about the lower part of the middle. but one thing though, the houses may not have been the best, but in the morning, everyone was either sweeping or mopping the bit of a courtyard out front, and inside, the houses were very tidy. they didn't have much, but they took very good care of what they had. dan 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

msaucey says on Aug 3, 2007, 10:48: lagringa, the sad answer to your question is... Yes.... Note that racism doesn't really exist, but classism does.... But, it's not too extreme, where people will be injured... But, depending on what class you fall under you may be insulted.... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Peter (Moderator) says on Aug 3, 2007, 14:01: Yes, class is quite important in Colombia. The middle class family will have a lower class muchacha (cleaning lady), for example, never a middle-class muchacha. Poor but snappy 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

msaucey says on Aug 3, 2007, 14:52: tomtom.... I said, racism doesn't really exist... meaning, there may be some, but in comparison to other places, not as much... classism is more of a factor then racism for the most part in Colombia.... tomtom33 says on Aug 3, 2007, 16:31: I am most familiar with Cartagena and Medellin having lived in both cities. I have encountered racial prejudice much worse than I have ever experienced in the US. And I went to high school in suburban Milwaukee, the most segregated city in the US. It amazes me to have otherwise intelligent Colombians comment negatively on interracial dating.
