Hello everyone! I'm down here in El tigre, Venezuela on a new teaching assignment, living rent free, making an American salary in dollars, enjoying cheap gas prices (70 b's por litro...and I just bought a gas-guzzling ford explorer) and excellent exchange rate (black market is at 4.800 right now, but I found an American petrolero who'll buy my dollars for 5 mil al dolar). Plus, there are beautiful morenitas por todos lados. So yes, this gringo is definitely getting his "latinamerican fix" and has no reason to complain whatsoever. And yet, I can't seem to stop thinking about going back to Colombia...at least for vacation, if nothing else.
I miss the friendly people (they are friendly here, but it's not as genuine as it is in Colombia...(alla te cogen carino de verdad), perfect climate (especially in Medellin), the food (Colombian dishes are definitely better tasting and somewhat heathier than the food served here...not that I don't enjoy traditional dishes like pabellon criollo, parrilla de carne, hallaca, o empenadas...they just have too much grasa).
However, among all the subtle cultural differences between these two proud south american nations, one major difference stands out in my mind: Colombian women have more style! They are a bit more feminine and coqueta (and no woman has a better "swing" in their walk than the average paisa), substantially more conscientious about their weight and physical appearance (most women here are on the "rellenita" side, and seldom wear make-up), and infinitely more classy (women here get drunk in public, belch at will, and curse like a sailor at sea)...even the colombian interesadas do their "thing" with more style and class (I had a chama approach me and tell me flat out that she was very "ambiciosa" and would "tirarme por todos lados" if I paid for her college degree)
By no means should any of you feel sorry for me...cuz this gig is definitely sweet, and beats living in gringolandia. But I do realize that Colombia truly is a special place...so, don't take it for granted (those of you who live there)! QUE ENVIDIA...(pero de las buenas jejeje)!

critter says on Sep 14, 2007, 19:45: Yeah billyb, she was a mamacita too but there are three things I don't do: prepagos, pospagos, o visas para gringolandia "Spending eternity in a bad place is a long time!" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

critter says on Sep 14, 2007, 19:48: Thanks Simon...you have every right in the world to be fanatically proud of your country, culture, and heritage. Colombianos, por lo general, son sensillamente lo maximo! "Spending eternity in a bad place is a long time!" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

RUV says on Sep 14, 2007, 20:30: Hay critter, I understand prepago and visa para gringolanda, but what the heck is pospagos? Is that prepago on lay away?

critter says on Sep 14, 2007, 20:45: Pospago is when they (i.e. interesadas) give up "the goodies" and expect you to spend your last dollar on them to secure THEIR financial future...o sea first comes the sex and then you really pay...to keep them around!!! CaptainHowdy says on Sep 14, 2007, 20:46: Darn, Critter...I would have at least given her a test run or two before telling her "No!!" You wouldn't be out anything and you'd have another experience to share!!! And, I completely agree with you on not doing pre or post pagos...That's some scary stuff in my book... CaptainHowdy says on Sep 15, 2007, 10:41: I thought about teaching in Colombia, too. I spoke with the director of a bilingual school outside of Pereira and I was told I could teach the classes in English (not English classes) and the pay would be about 1.3 million COP per month. That would set me up for about the same standard of living I have here. Not bad but I still need to learn Spanish fluently before I relocate.. critter says on Sep 15, 2007, 12:22: I am teaching Computer Technology to 3-13 year olds, Secondary American Literature, Secondary Creative Writing, and Basic Russian. Yes, I am loving it...especially the small class sizes (5-10 students per class), plus the students are well-disciplined and highly motivated (this is the way the teaching profession is supposed to be!) billyb says on Sep 15, 2007, 16:58: Critter, Clavo has been dealing with some health issues with a family member. So he feels he can't bring the same "sweetness" to PBH we've grown use to, but he'll be back, to GIB's delight I'm sure:)

CaptainHowdy says on Sep 15, 2007, 21:24: Yes, that's how teaching is SUPPOSED to be...You know, as much as we'd like to strangle the undisciplined, disrespectful student, it's their parents that need strangling for allowing their child to become this way...If you've found students that are motivated, well "Congratulations," my friend...Enjoy!!! :) Teaching preteens the things they need to know! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

critter says on Sep 16, 2007, 07:21: Juancho, yes the women here in Venezuela are certainly "eye-candy" too (as far as being more beautiful than colombianas...I'm thinking...NOOOT!). I have been to Caracas and PLC too, and agree that there are enough "cuerpazotes con traseros brasilenos" strutting around to cause serious whiplash, but the way they dress (compared to colombianas), for example, is rather plain for the most part. I also agree that venezolanas are hilarious (muy echadoras de bromas) and perhaps more fun to be around than the "take life serious" colombianas. One thing is for sure, you don't EVER have to guess what is on their mind around here...son muy directos y francos por aca. "Spending eternity in a bad place is a long time!" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

critter says on Sep 16, 2007, 07:55: Sorry to disappoint you, Rubito, but I really don't have any interest in grillas (o sea nimphos looking to put another notch in their corea) either. No I'm not a prude, and yes I have encountered 'heat-of-the-moment" one-night stands before (where no money was involved). But I honestly didn't feel very good about myself afterwards...I guess I'm just not shallow enough to convince myself that this "dine-and-dash" mentality is ok. critter says on Sep 16, 2007, 10:04: CaptainHowdy, I agree with you 100%...the key to success for all students is getting "baby-makers" to fulfill all of their obligations as parents (not just as providers of food, clothes, and shelter), by actually assuming their designated role as "primary educators" of THEIR offspring. As primary educators, parents are certainly NOT expected to be responsible for creating lesson plans designed specifically for certain age groups/develomental stages or providing specific lessons in core and/or elective subjects...(they can leave that up to the professionals). But they should be there every step of the way teaching them good eating, sleeping, and study habits. Good manners, respect for others and their property, kindness and consideration and other success orientations should also be introduced, emphasized, and reinforced at home first.
