Barrio Manzanares

Thanks to Spain´s three kings visiting Medellin, the governement prohibited transport of gas pipetas in Medellin for the entire weekend of Friday thru Monday morning without informing anyone. So along with many businesses, we were stuck because we only had enough gas to get us thru Saturday. We called around and finally found a place in Manizares that would sell us a 100 lb tank but we had to go get it. If one starts at la 80 by Consumo near my business, go up the canalazacion past Altavista-lower part, Aliadas, and then when you cannot go any further, make a right, go about a half mile which is as far as you can go and then make a left. Believe it or not that little road goes on and on for about another hour. Many poor barrios along the way, all estratos 1 & 2´s out that way and that road will get you eventually out to Aguas Frias where a casa-finca wouldn´t run you too much. Maybe $40-50 millones. Anyway, I´ve been to Altavista-upper part up that way which is a no-no, but it was my first time stopping in Barrio Manizares. Its about a 20 minute slow drive from the Consumo on la 80. Real poor but it had some real nice people. I chatted over a beer with a small store owner and every local jumped up to help unload the empty pipeta and load the full one into the car and they weren´t looking for a tip. I expressed my gratitude and bought empanadas for everyone, cost me 6 mil pesos for 20 meat filled emapandas. I felt like they´d never seen a gringo in their barrio before. Came back down the hill praying no police would stop me to open my trunk as the pipeta would have gotten me a hefty fine.

Traffic jams The entire area around the Intercontinental Hotel has been closed, Avenida Las Palmas, Transversal Inferior and Transversal Superior are closed to the traffic, you see hundreds of people walking because no buses are allowed.

My wife's used to go to My wife used to go to Altavista regularly because a cousin of hers lived up there until he got bumped off by some sicarios one day. Not that anything like that ever happened in Medellin.

UC - Upper or Lower part of Altavista? They say I can´t even go to the lower part (the part in between consumo & cra 83) but I dont ever feel unsafe there and have ran many domicilios alone there. It´s the upper part that makes me dump a load in my pants. We wont deliver there.

Unfortunately, Belen Violetas behind the U de M is starting to get "caliente" again with seemingly increased robberies. So we go in twos to do domicilios there.
