Barranquilla Isn't As Bad As Some Say!

There's something of a myth on this Board that Barranquilla is comprised for the most part of hot noisy dirty slums.

Full of rathole bars blasting reggaeton at ear shattering levels, drug and alcohol fueled customers slouched at the bars obliviously to anything but the fat ugly hookers they can't afford (unless they are gringo booze/dope addicts).

In fact Barranquilla has all kinds of normal people living normal lives, going to normal jobs/schools, eating regularly and listening to anything but reggaeton.

true ... in addition Shakira ... Barranquilla has some real beauty. Of course, I have rose colored glasses - getting married there (to my currambera) in 22 days.

The Castillo de Salgar is an incredible place to have a wedding, and surprisingly affordable thanks to the exchange.

Someone else's myth As in someone who has never been to B/Quilla. It is hot at times, always noisy, and dirty. I plan on retiring there.

elmodefoque ... ...must admit that the only time my wife and I were afraid in Colombia was on a late night taxi trip (short cut) from the airport through a barrio to our assigned hotel. The "local residents" were banging on the top and sides of the auto. We actually thought we were in trouble and might not get out without injury.

Would not do that again without a local guide.

RJ I have had big fun there and like the place. Now the sites in the taxi ride from the airport can be cause for concern but once you are past all of that things are ok.

Barranquillla is a nice place...but living there is definitely different, compared to living in the interior.

I'm not really used to the climate and its side effects either, but otherwise, I have no other qualms and anyone willing to spend some time there can well do so..

Spent all day at home yesterday with that station on the radio -a huge snowstorm blew through town here so nothing moved.

The music they played was wonderful to hear-older stuff a few Xmas tunes and some older Venezuelan music that was so sweet.

Sam Salmon...... You're talking about snowstorms and Barranquilla all in the same sentence. In the meantime, it was 60 something degrees today.....same for Tuesday. Then in the evening, Artic winds come to town...
