Barrancabermeja anyone?

Hi,

I'd be interested to hear about any experiences anyone has had travelling to Barrancabermeja. I am aware it was once dubbed the Sarajevo of Colombia but understand things have calmed down now quite a bit (I was told to think of Medellin 20 years ago compared to now).

Have you been there? If so, can you recommend a cheap place to stay which is not a brothel?
Any comments on the **current** safety situation?
Any things worth visiting apart from the Museo del Petroleo?
Anyone tried taking the train that still runs daily from Puerto Berrio to Barrancabermeja?
Anyone gone upriver/downriver by boat along the Magdalena from there?
Any tips appreciated.

Thanks. Ixent

A friend of mine from there warned me last year not to go. Specifically mentioned safety issues in general and might not be so friendly for foreigners. I am a bit adventurous, but that was enough of a deterrent for me, esp. since I'd already read similar things.

There supposedly used to be a lot of problems with paracos, although I think the worst of that has passed. One of my uncle's worked there for Ecopetrol a long time ago and said that it's one of the ugliest places in Colombia. It is supposedly a very industrial city.

Reasonably boring... very very hot... and the women have bad tempers... It was totally safe for me, though I was warned against going up the river by boat...

It´s hot and humid!!!
Half the city lives out the refinery, the other half live from the people who live out of the refinery...

There are also lots of African palm oil plantations.
I ahven´t been there in a long time, but I have many friends who work there are commute on weekends to Bucaramanga (2 hours, 70 miles). The town has grown considerably lately. There is even an EXITO under construction right now...

And I'm not going there because of a girl!

I wanted to ask if anyone know if there are likely to be Cash machines there, or do I need to bring all the cash I need on my person?

hi, I am from Barracabermeja I lived there for 31 years. This is as hot as US in summer time 94-95-96 almost never 100F.
It is as dangerous as any other place in the world. Just stay away from those hot areas like suburbans neighborhoods and stay out of problems. People are friendly. Just stay in the urban area.
There were many conflicts but we all paid for that and now we can say is safe. Evertyhing we suffered as a city is gone.Everything we lived, saw, and felt is gone I can say is really nice now. All my family is there and for real is totally different now.
I am more sacred of going to a gas stations here in USA or going to laces I do not know. I am more scared here, with all those drug dealers and crazy people on streets.

It is a city as any other. Technology, transportation, but above everything a good place to ENJOY.

Have fun.
