Barbosa

I am planning to visit Barbosa in November. I met a Colombian woman and am looking forward to seeing her, meeting her family, and having her show me around. I have read many of the posts and really enjoy this site, but I still have some reservations about the safety aspect of my visit. I would appreciate any input anyone would have to offer.

Hi You should try to contact Carter, he knwos the santander area very well.

If you feel worried about safety (I really dont know much about barbosa) one option is that you could try to meet them in Bucaramanga... is about 4 hours from Barbosa and is a relativately big city.

Barbosa Its located no more than 30 minutes north of Medellin and is very nice and safe little town in the country-side. Barbosa has a large water park(Parque de Las Aguas) that I have been to many times. Many have country-houses(fincas) there for quiet weekend get-aways, and there is a few hotels/resorts. You will see a lot military personel in Barbosa which may startle foreigners that have not seen this before, but their presence makes the area safe to visit. They check traffick entering/leaving Medellin as a safety precaution and provide security to the water park that attracts a lot of people from Medellin.

There are two towns called Barbosa in Colombia Hi Joe, I am from Bucaramanga. There are two towns called Barbosa here, one is in Antioquia state and the other in Santander, my state (departamento). As Vladimiro said, Barbosa Antioquia is located half an hour from Medellín, and Barbosa Santander is between Bucaramanga and Tunja. Travelling from Bucaramanga or from Bogota is easy by bus (best bus lines are Berlinas del Fonce and Copetrán). I have never lodged in one of those cities, I have passed them while travelling from Bucaramanga to Bogotá and from Bucaramanga to Medellín but I think you will have no problem if you are not going to buy any properties over there; some friends from Tunja have been asked to pay money from guerrilla because they own a farm there. Barbosa and Velez (Santander) are the place to eat guava sweet known here as "bocadillo". If the Barbosa you are talking about is in Santander, I strongly recommend you to visit Sangil and Barichara in Santander and visit the beautiful Boyacá region.

Barbosa Antioquia I am a Dutch guy visiting Colombia for over a decade and especially Barbosa Antioquia.
A main issue for someone first visiting Colombia is most of the time safety. There is so many information
to find about this topic in general that I only will refer to my experiences to Barbosa and Medellin which are
positive all over these years I have been around.

Barbosa is a small village where I find myself comfortable. First visit in the early 90ths and with my red head
pale skin "outfit" no place to hide presuming being a Colombian ! No problem at all , people are friendly willing to help
where ever they can making you feel at home.
Recently I can move around because I am "a known stranger" without the staring faces.

The Road to Medellin is really nice with nice views and a lots of country merchandise on its way.
Selling a lots of fruits delicious strawberry's, crepes ,restaurants (open air) etc.
In the close surrounding of Barbosa are plenty of beautiful Finca's which is mainly the reason of my vistit to
this little village. For me its a paradise being there and breething nature.

In weekends however especially on Sundays ,Barbosa changes in a very crowded place
entering all the farmers selling fruits vegatables and merchandise brought into town by horses and chiva's
makes it a sightseeing you won't forget and won't be aware in the western world.
Entering people from the finca's aswell to hang around with the live music makes it crowded
on the main square downtown and on dias festivas its really full of life.

Climate is perfect at a hight approx 1500 m not to hot during daytime and cool late in the evening
and at night. What I would suggest is if you don't speak any Spanish at least trying is a must.
People really appreciate even your level is far below basic. But here comes in my opinion the real "danger"....
Just the moment after all these clases you think you manage your way around speaking Spanish...the paisas think
aswell. They notice your improving skills aswell and change into PAISA !! Though really nice to hear you feel completely lost
and clases starting all over. To me it seems they have a paisa word for all spanish words.

Just an impression of some medellin fotos and some of the Barbosa Finca.
(the house is rebuilt and left it in origanal state)

If you have any question it will be my pleasure to try to help you or give some further information.
I wil be there aswell from half November so your welcome...
