bad quality in medellin?

It just seems that everything I buy that is related to electronics is bad quality here.

I started out buying movies and they all suck.. Now I´m renting from blockbuster to aviod that. Even musical cd´s are bad quality.

Then I bought a computer and it only works when it wants to. Already had it replaced once and no se how many more times.

I tried to buy some computer games but they didn´t work. So I returned them for new ones and no surprise...the new ones don´t work either.

It just seems to me that a lot of people sell trash here. I think you have to be really carefull who you buy from.

I had a conversation with a gringo friend of mine the other day and he told me he won´t buy anything unless the place is recommended to him.. I think the problem with that is if one place treats you good it won´t necessarily treat your friend good. So maybe recommendations don´t mean shit? How do you find good quality in this city??? I have no idea.

Burn your own music and movies if you want copies from the internet. Don't buy a clone computer I had a similar problem in Miami so its everywhere. Computer Games clone via torrent sites. I bought software in Medellin and had no problems but thru recommendation..Now I get software via torrent sites on the internet...

Say welcome to the onrush of cheap chinese goods and pirated fake products into Colombia,,,You get what you pay for always true in the past and will remain so in the future. I am in the market for a small apartment sized portable Washing machine and after looking at the Foreign made units, instead of buying one made made in China/india, I'm buying a 50 year old American Made Kenmore or Handy Hot Unit and refurbishing it to last another 50 years.

Clone computer, what is that?

I have a tech guy who builds my computers & servers from parts he buys in the Monterray shoping center.

Never had a problem yet, he buys mostly from the same shop.

Electric good are a lot cheaper in the US than Colombia from what the gringos say to me, not like the UK for example.

I wish I could buy a good brand name computer but on my salary here in medellin I just can´t afford it. Now the hard part is going to be trying to get my money back from the crap that they sold me.

No download a free torrent browser and I use piratebay.org....for full albums, movies.and software..

I use the Azureus Vuze Browser and then download from www.piratebay.org which I use...depending on your broadband the download can last a few hours or a few days...You can get Rosetta Stone right now from there..but software is tricky...

I need a working computer to do that. This computer works but the internet sucks. My velocity is 1 or 2mbps. Shouldn´t it be 54? That´s what it was with the old computer anyway. My internet constantly drops off and I can´t make skype phone calls. I´m actually amazed I´m able to stay connected long enough to post here and read this site. Most of the time I can´t connect to my broadband internet.

When my wife calls tech support and tells them this they say that it´s normal. Maybe shitty performance is normal for them?

tomtom33 & mranderson,

I suspect it depends who is sharing your lines.

Mine always flys early in the morning, at 5am when I get up, then it slows down with just the odd time going as fast as first thing.

We bought one during a sale, and we got a lot of good free upgrades. I believe we paid for a 17" screen and got a 22, plus a hell lot of memory and other inside things. I am not sure which CC we paid with.. I think it was the Colombian one... they shipped for free to our home... we paid 1,500,000 for something that would cost here in Colombia (Hewlett Packard) around 4 millions...

Too bad that the internet sucks though.. I cant stand cable union.

I would buy from a major manufacture unless you have a reference...like I could refer using Chiptech in Hallandale Florida but don't have any references for Colombia yet. Also still based on performance and configuration Dell computers are priced better in the States..you get more features for your buck.

huskie,

Tuesday I am going to pick up a server my guy did, I will give you the name of the store he buys his stuff from, remind me Tuesday if I forget about it.

Its no guarantee that the parts you buy will be fine, but I have been buying things from there since 2003, with no problem, I have bought about 20 million worth of things from them for referance.

Oh man that sucks. I hate having problems with electronics...I use my computer everyday, pretty much all the time so it is very important for me to have a reliable machine. At the end of the day, what seemed to be a cheap deal ends up being a nightmare... I've learned my lesson and I refuse to buy non-apple computer stuff.
Bad quality products are not exclusive to Medellin... If you buy your electronics from reputable stores not only will you enjoy a higher quality product but also be covered by their warranty. When buying electronics, expect something more or less along the lines of what you'd get at circuit city or best buy. If it doesn't get close to that then don't buy it!

We buy pretty much all of our electronics in Carrefour. Never really had problems. It is better to buy it in a place like that, where you also have warranty, then to buy it in el centro for maybe 70mil cheaper... but those 70mil will burn in your rear once you start having problems and no guarantee....
The only thing that bothers the hell out of me are.. headphones.. I have bought 3 pairs of them already, all of them from Maxwell (if I spelled it correctly) and all of them suck from the start... back home they worked perfectly fine, but here they all SUCK.... Who knows where I can get simple ones that at least WORK (and not to expensive as I use them on the bus and in the university)..
