If you want a traditional name, seems to me like half the girls in Colombia are named Martha (seen it spelled with and without the 'h', which isn't pronounced anyway) and 85% of the Mexican girls are named either Maria or some variation of Guadalupe. Take your pick.....Oh good, here's my chance to work in one of my favorite trivia bits. If you translate their names into English, two of the most important heroes in Mexican history were named "Emmily" and "Dorthy" (Emiliano Zapata and Doroteo Arrango, aka Francisco 'Pancho' Villa).

Ok....... If the baby is a girl, i think Shirly would be the best jejejejeejjej but never Maria, Martha, Milena, Paola or Gloria 'cause if you are in a crowded place and say Maria 50 women will turn around.......... and the same for Pedro, Carlos, Juan, Luis, Jose ejejejejjejejej

All men in Colombia seem to be called Juan Carlos, and women are Maria (insert any second name here)...

How about Janeth, now that's Colombian.

Names My Colombian boyfriend's name is John, and always has been, though people assume he *was* originally named Juan. His uncle chose the name, but his mother and relatives pronounce it more like "Jhoun" (as in Jean Claude Van Dame).....

My mother-in-law has a pretty name: Belen (accent over last e).

Generalizations about names in Colombia - like Martha for women and Juan Carlos for men, that is not the case in my family. In all my family, there is none with either one of these names, for men - Daniel, Edison, William, Oscar, Aaron, Hector, Efrain, Albaro, Enrique, Omar and so on... and for women Estela, Cristina, Claudia, Alba, Aura, Ester, Jacqueline, Nelly, Gloria, Marina, Liliane, Esperanza .. perhaps my family is unique or those generalizations are just that - generalizations.

Catalina Katalina is my nieces name. I call her CuteyKat. I also love names that flow like those Maria Flora, or Juan David. Middle names are great. Research the root meaning of names. For example Vanessa means "bright light" in Hebrew. You can make your own name using root meanings just like people have come up with Crystal and Luz and all that stuff.
