Authenticating a diploma/transcript from the USA

Have any of you had to authenticate your transcrips/ university diploma from abroad? My husband seems to think that once I get serious about looking for a job I will need to have it done. He says they do it at the ministry in Bogota and since I will be there in couple of weeks, I was wondering if any of you know any information about having it done and if you think I really will have to. My husband doesn't know any other information about it. I am not looking for work in the field that I studied. I am just lookng to teach English in Bucaramanga. I studies Intercultural Communications at a well known University in Texas.

So, have any of you done this or looked into it? Please share any info you many know about it.

adrienne you shouldn't need to authenticate any diplomas for teaching English.....unless you are teaching curricular English to grad students who are studying their masters

In order to get my work Colombian VISA I had to get my diploma and my criminal background first notarized and then apostilized in the US.

That is an authenitcation, so maybe that's what he's talking about.

This was part of the process to get my work visa to teach here in Bucaramanga (though it should be the same anywhere).

I have a friend from Bogota(natve) who has her teaching degree from a Univ in Bogota and who in her early 20s came to Miami. She later enrolled in the Nursing program at the U of Miami and graduated and has worked as an ICU Nurse several years in Miami. She later decided to return to Bogota to care for one of her elderly Parents and had planned on working In Bogota during this time. It was so much of a hassle(to work legally as a Nurse) she gave up on the idea and instead travels every few months and stays for a couple weeks and returns to Miami. For her, it wasn't such an easy road,,,,

HI, I am Colombian but live in the UK, I am married to and English guy and both of us are going to Colombian next January for 6 months to teach English. Originally I was told we had to get a visa an working visa for my husband and have his university degree authenticated and translated into Spanish by a registred translator, all this had to be done in Bogota.
When I came back to the UK I went to the Colombian embassy here and they told me different.

My husband does not need a working visa as he is married to me, he will be allowed to work for 2 years and after that he will need to apply for a visa (he will get it, will just need to apply for it) we do not have to translate the documents or degrees, they will be authenticated here in the embassy providing we bring original copies. They are free and the only thing I need to do is to register my marriage in the embassy. My husband has got a degree in Accountancy but not in Modern Languages, so he is studying TEFL, and this will give him a diploma to be able to teach English worldwide.

If you are Colombian you shouldn't have a problem, as I don't but I suggest you visit the Colombian embassy where you are.

Goodl luck

Sorry, I posted the comment from my girlfriends account (ana-ant-eater).

But for both places I was looking to find work here at (two different schools here in Bucaramanga), they told me I needed to do this. It is also a requirement for the Work Visa here in Colombia.
