ATTN: English teachers, Personal Trainers, I need some advice please

Hey Ya'll,

Been in Colombia for a while. Thinking of starting to teach conversational english to Colombians who already know some english. What can a fellow charge for this?

Also, thinking of starting a little "personal training in english business", since I am a certified persoanal trainer, but am not using this certification right now. Again, what can a fellow charge per session here in Bogota? What do gyms want in exchange for me using their facilities with my clients?

Thanks!

That is hard to say... I know some British and americans guys in colombia, they work at high class schools, in the north of Bogota as teachers.
A lot of rich people in bogota send their kids to bilingual schools, and almost all their classes are in english, and almost all their teachers are american or even european. you can try that!

what do you mean with personal training in english bussiness?? are you talking about a personal trainer?

Outside of normal school hours i've been giving private classes to various people (professional and students) and have charged the going rate of 15'000pesos per hour. This is based on 'one-to-one' classes and mainly just conversation. That is the rate where i am, but i live in a small city in the north of the country, and i have known people who have charged twice that in the big cities such as Medellin and Bogota.
It is also a good idea to take small groups, so you can charge each of them less, but make more yourself per hour - this can also make your lessons more dynamic conversationally - obviously don't make the groups too big or it will be counter-productive.

private classes at companies You could also set up private groups in various companies; many are interested in improving the language skills of their engineers, architects, business managers etc. Some might want to invest on their bilingual secretaries learning better communications skills in English. (That's something I used to do time to time when I lived in Cali)

Thanks for the advice everyone:) How cool is this site that we can post questions and actually get real-time answers!

Really, thank you all for the advice. I had not thought of groups, which is a swell idea. Do you offer vocab sheets? Tests? Text's...and if so where would I find them? You know, logistics questions!

Yes motherof2, personal training in gyms for weight loss and muscle growth as well as general health. I like the idea of offering training sessions where my client and i speak only in english for the session, giving him/her the chance to practice, ask questions, etc, while getting fit. Vocab sheets and quizes, complimented by pronuciation of said vocab dubbed onto CD.

Also, if there is anyone else in Bogota who might be interested in chatting with me over such a business, contact me and we can brainstorm!

One last question. I am wicked sick right now. Why, in a place with such mild climate changes am I this freekin sick!?

Take care friends:)

charging for english lessons Hi, I gave private conversational English lessons to students and professional people in Medellin when I lived there until last year. I charged 22.000 pesos per hour for professionals and usually between 17-18.000 for students, who told me they couldn't afford 22.000. However I haven't been in Colombia since last September, so I don't know if prices have risen since then.

Whereabouts are you living? If in Medellin, I think you can get teaching resources from the Colombo-Americano. There must be a similar place in Bogota, too, and I imagine also in Cali. Also if you're in a smaller city there is probably a British Council which may be able to help.
