Are there many Asians that live in Colombia?
I wanted to travel there through the major cities like Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, etc.
What are people's perceptions of Asians? Will I be stared at or mistreated?
Im a 27 yr old thai male

ozgringo says on Aug 23, 2007, 20:26: I can only speak of Medellin. There is a population of Chiness here in Medellin, not so many other asians though. I doubt very much you will get stared at or mistreated, as the people here are helpful, courteous and respectful. may a thousand mangy wombats shit in your billabong 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mr. Hollywood says on Aug 23, 2007, 20:42: Bogobogo. You'll be fine. Just be prepared to be thick-skinned about everyone calling you "chino" because in Colombia they're not so great about distinguishing between the various Asian countries and peoples. But nobody is going to single you out or mistreat you for being asian.

Mr. Hollywood says on Aug 24, 2007, 09:01: I don't think so. Pow wow's question would have been something like, "Is it true that all Colombians think Asians smell funny and eat dogs?"

Miguel says on Aug 27, 2007, 08:52: elmodofoque, his "Fat Bastard" sized nephew and me ate at a Chinese restaurant in Quilla earlier this year; the food was great and the portions so large that even his nephew could not finish off what elmodofoque and me could not finish off, which is a miracle, since the dude is a human eating machine. While lunching at this fine establishment, we were observing the Chinese owners over at a corner table. They were corroncho chinos, old in appearance, all dressed in sleeveless white t-shirts, chain smoking ciggies and playing some card game.

ahda007 says on Aug 27, 2007, 15:17: Hey Bogobobo, don't worry so much. I am chinese/panama (asian appearance) and I have traveled and married a colombiana. I had some experiences there with people starring in all sort of ways, but never have I been attacked or verbally assualted. I guess it helps to have a Colombian wife and/or my inlaws to be around for most of my time in Colombia. I never had one bad experience in Medellin during my 2 visits in 2 different year.

But they think it was funny that this Asian looking American could understand what they were saying when they spoke in Spanish. They really got a kick out of that.
