juancegomez says on Dec 16, 2007, 15:43:

I don't recall seeing that "party line" anywhere, but whatever...

This tragedy occurred in Bucaramanga and nobody here, myself obviously included, currently knows exactly what happened inside the house, what the robbers-murderers were thinking of, what they knew about their victims, or what measures could have prevented this with 100% certainty.

It's extremely easy (and irresponsible, some would say) to claim that "oh, this wouldn't have happened if they were armed"....but without considering the real circumstances that's just crap, since people who own weapons can still be robbed or murdered and, likewise, people who don't have any can still avoid being robbed or murdered.

Too many other factors affect the equation, not just having a gun or not. A person who has a gun stored in a location they couldn't reach in time isn't exactly in a better position, to name just one example among literally infinite possibilities.

US Woman Killed in Robbery in Colombia

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — A U.S. woman was shot and killed as she vacationed with her Colombian husband in this South American country, in a robbery that netted $200 and a laptop computer, police said on Sunday.

Jean Oviedo, 37, arrived 10 days ago at the northeastern Colombian city of Bucaramanga with her three children and husband, said police Gen. Alvaro Enrique Miranda.

On Saturday night, two assailants burst into her husband's family home, shooting her in the neck during the course of the robbery. She died at a nearby hospital.

Local authorities said Oviedo is from South Carolina, but an independent search could not confirm her residence there.

Police were still unclear why the two men chose to break into the third-floor apartment where Oviedo was staying, bypassing other homes, Miranda said.

Colombian police are offering a $2,500 reward for information.

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

I have seen home invasions like this in the U.S. and it usually had to do with an unpaid drug debt. This is exactly, the way I have seen it in the U.S.. But of course, that does not make it the same here.

she has only been here 10 days......gringos can live here undetected for years....10 days and the bad guys know where you live no way....here's an example...yesterday I had a small party at my place....anyway I had invited a friend from school to come....well she lost my address and phone number but knew the party was yesterday....she remembered more or less where I lived...so she walked up and down the calles in the neighborhood hoping to bump into our orange house...anyway she said she asked a few people and asked where the gringo lived...no one knew about a gringo in the neighborhood...I said to myself fantastic.....anyway she finally found my place after walking for an hour

LAKE WALES -- A premature baby delivered after his mother was kidnapped and set on fire during the robbery of a Polk County insurance office died early Sunday, authorities said.

The 1-pound, 2-ounce baby, delivered by Caesarian section Thursday night, died at an Orlando hospital, Lake Wales Police Chief Herbert Gillis said. The child was born more than three months premature.

The baby’s mother, Juanita “Jane Luciano, 23, and his aunt, Yvonne Bustamante, 26, were set on fire during a robbery Thursday at the Nationwide Insurance office where they worked, police said. Both remain in extremely critical condition.

A man who came to their rescue was shot in the nose but he’s OK, police said. The man charged in the crimes, Leon Davis Jr., 30, also is believed to be the man who killed two employees of a BP gas station in another Polk County city on Dec. 7, Sheriff Grady Judd said Saturday.

He was linked to the slayings when the bullets taken from the two gas station victims matched bullets fired during Thursday’s attack on the two women.

Davis was in jail without bond on a variety of charges related to the attack on the women. Judd said he will also be charged with the gas station slayings.
