Anyone going to be in Cartagena June 10th through the end of June?

It would be nice to hang out with some gringos, if any are around.

I'm going to be doing a "homestay" through a Spanish and Volunteering program at Nueva Lengua language institute.

I'm pretty psyched, as I will be staying with a family instead of a dorm or hotel and I will also be coaching a soccer team somewhere in the rural areas south or outside of the city as my "volunteer" assignment.

I've read quite a bit about Babar, Mr. Babilla and Tu Candela.

I've also come across these names, but they might be too wild/crazy for me and/or have too many "working women"....

When you say "hairy," are you talking about pickpockets and "petty" crimes during the day against tourists or something more serious?

I will only be there during the mornings or early afternoons, not at nighttime.

You should be fine during those hours "hairy" = pickpockets, assaults, "atraques", etc. . . .
At those hours, you'll be fine though . . . just keep in mind that walking towards "El Parque Centenario" - you'll find some seedy characters . . . towards "Calle Larga" its a bit more cleaned up . . . another good spot - "La Bonga del Sinú" = GREAT beef, a bit more pricey than "Mar de Las Antillas" . . .
