SIMONETA SKYPE is a difficult sell as it's offered for free !!! Most posters here understand the technology of VOIP but many have difficultity wrapping their mind around the simple installation and operation of these phones. It takes 5-10 minutes to download the software and install the "plug and play" ATA or USB port IP phone.

There are service providers that offer free service better than SKYPE.

Look at the list of local access numbers in the USA and a few abroad from which you can place "free call" with standard telephone devices to the IP phones. With these providers all calls from IP phones to other IP phones using the services of any of these three service providers are from but also calls using the local access lines are free (better than SKYPE). In other words if you lived in New Jersey (just an example) you could call a friend in Colombia on your cell or home phone through a local access number free if your friend has a ATA or USB port IP phone installed in Colombia.

No local access numbers in the UK yet ...But calls are free from IP phone to IP phone anywhere. Check out http://www.Primus.com or Packet 8 as both have unlimited calling plans that pick up western europe.

SKYPE I personally have used IPhonecenter, mamakall and Vonage in the past. I prefer Skype; Skype has made a big improvement in their quality and some adjustments in rates, making them cheaper. I can call Medallo for less than .9cents a min. but this is just my personal preference.

For the record Skype DOES offer incoming numbers in the UK, for 30 euros a year.
I've been using it regularly and while it's not perfect, it is improving almost daily, and it is FREE. On a good day it actually is better audio quality than any other method that I know of.

I was unable to use Skype when calling from Cali because the internet connection was so poor (frequent stops and starts in transmission doesn't work for audio at all!). I found this problem in more than one place. Mind you, the long distance call I made from the booth in the Internet cafe in Cali was just as bad...

Works great from Canada on semi-high-speed, though.
