I spent some time in Neiva and had a great time. Because it is so hot there, Colombians will tell you that just saying the word, Neiva, will cause a person to sweat. Some of my friends in Colombia warned me about going there due to the FARC presence in the area, but my friend's brother made me go. He wanted me to spend time at his house and show me around that region.

It is a relatively decent sized capital. There are some nice little restaurants, stores, etc. I do not know how familiar you are with other cities so I won't make comparisons; however, it definitely had a slower pace than many of the bigger cities, though. It is on the Magdalena. There are some hot springs just outside of the city in a town called Rivera. It probably is not real attractive to the average tourist, nevertheless, I liked Neiva.

What kind of things were you wanting to know about it?

I go to Neiva all the time. My mom and my wife are from there. I was actually just looking at airfares for my next trip down there.

Neiva is an OK town. There is not much for a tourist to see there. There are about 400,000 residents, but it feels very much like a large town instead of a small city. The people are very friendly.

The city itself is relatively safe, but other parts of the Huila district can be very dangerous and there is a lot of FARC and other criminal activity in rural regions. However, if you are with relatives or other people that you trust, you should be OK. I have been many times since childhood and have never run into any problems. Of course, I speak perfect Colombian Spanish and aside from being tall, I look like your average Colombian.

It's a very hot place. The average temperature during most of the year is between the high 80s to the mid 90s.

If you have any more specific questions, let me know and I will try to help.

Good luck,
CG

I noticed that as well esanch36. The people in Neiva are very kind to gringos, and often very curious to why the hell you're in Neiva.

Dead Head, I gather from your comment that you are basing your decision on where to teach on the amount of available non-indigenous women and the amount of money that you will be able to make...the monkey told me to be nice; therefore, I'll just wish you luck.
