Any info RE: Bucaramanga

Hi to all who may read this!
I posted a note similar to this but may not have posted it in the right area, so here goes again!

I am looking for any and all information you may have about Bucaramanga. This is my birthplace, and I want to learn all I can about it. I was adopted when I was younger from an orphanage there.
I have grown up in the US, but am and will always be a Colombiana at heart! I want to get back to Bucaramanga (hopefully) within the next year, but definately within the next couple years. I will be visiting Bogota as well, as my siters were from there. I speak some spanish now, but I have much to improve on before I go back to Colombia.
I will greatly appreciate any responses to this and I thank you in advance! I look froward to hearing from anyone who can help me.

Hi Roxy I think its very nice you want to come back to the place you are originally from.

I am from Bucaramanga but moved to the US in july (so not long ago). I love the city, its beautiful and friendly even though santadereanos have an image of getting angry easy... which may be true but I think we also get very happy easily.

I posted some info here: http://www.poorbuthappy.com/colombia/node/10321 for someone who was planning on a trip. If you need more information of any kind please PM me. My family and friends still live there and I know they would love to help with anything you need.

Get ready to enjoy that trip, I am sure you are going to love it!

Abrazos

Silvia

Congrats on your trip Roxy,
I'm flattered Camo, but I'm absolutely positive that Silviat's knowledge of Bucaramanga is more recent than mine, and PBH poster Vicshere also lives there. Another poster called Carter knows the region.

I really like Bucaramanga. By north american standards it is a good sized city ( about 1.5 million people), with nice climate 24 C, and is less hectic than Bogota. My fave thing place nearby is a little town called Giron (just off the road between the airport and the city), which is a small colonial era town.

Roxy, on the upper right of the PBH window is a Google search tool, you can use this to search the site or the web. If you search "Bucaramanga" in this site you'll come up with numerous hits, including some with photo links, and other info.

here I am adrimmm I live close by in the town of san gil. sorry I have little time to write but will send more info soon.

there are couple of helpful people on this site who live in Bucaramanga, Vichare being the best of them.

Main attraction is Giron.
Best Club depends what you like but Mi Pias and Rock City aren't bad.
don't know the restaurants.

worth checking out San gil and Barichara 2 hours away.
San Gil famous for rafting and adventure tourism
Barichara famous for being a beautiful colonial town

send me a PM with any questions

some info Bucaramanga is a not that big a city like Bogotá . I believe the pop is about 1.5 mill. anyway I fine it very easy to get around town where it be by bus taxi car or motorcycle. I would say from the center of town to porta del sol its about 10 minutes by taxi 5 minutes by motorbike. Porta del sol is on the way out of Buca. towards Bogotá. The weather is great. during the day can be as high as 35C but the humidity is very low so it very tolerable not like the coast when its 35 it fell like 45. I remember the days back in Toronto when it was a mere 33 and you sweat buckets all day. Then at night its a comfortable 17C ... nice sleeping weather. As for someone saying its very dry here that's far from the truth.... although we do have dry spells we don't have a dry climate. We are at 3900 feet ASL similar to Calgary altitude. The cost of living here is very cheap compared to other parts of Colombia. You can fine a fairy cheap room with private bath for about 200,000 or 100 bucks Can. per month. The bus are 850 and taxis 2,200 min ride...... 2,200 will get around a 3 kms from the center of the city. As for things to do...well ...this is far from a vacation resorts area..... unfortunately the ocean is a 9 hour bus ride or a 7 hour drive by car. There is no lakes to speak so people go for outings in the near by rivers. Which are full of rocks and fast flowing water. There are things like white water rafting, rock climbing, paragliding, maintaining trekking there is many parks which are cool on a hot day to walk around in and within a one & half hour drive. We do have a lot of history in the area and with many old churchs and old building dating back to the Spanish explores if that suites your fancy. You will find very cheap areas to shop and expensive shops in the strato 6 neighborhoods. The people are friendly and always want to help you.....but be careful ...always remember if its too good to be true is a scam. A vast number of Colombians are very good at scamming....its a major industry . Anyway I have been living here for 2 1/2 years and this place is really growing on me the only thing I miss is the beach which I love. If only the beach was a drive down the mountain this place would be the cats meow. well that's it for now if you have any other question feel free to ask.
