Ok put it up....

Miguel were you from the Bay area? Wasn't that the hottest Thrash Metal scene in the 80's and early 90's?

Hi Rocco,
As for Colombia, I have yet to hear anything THAT brilliant (may be from ignorance or lack of exposure) so I cannot help you there.
As for other things, I am going to have a think.
Good luck with this post!

Ok so put up something new or unique from UK Ken...I can see that Colombia has some Colombian Rock and a lot of traditional Colombian music, but not a lot of newer Rock.

Since I know nothing of Colombian rock but enjoy some Latin music, let me make a leap into posting a very good Punk band that also does Mariachi. These guys grew up in LA and wanted to pay homage to the Mexican culture they grew up with, but still sing in English. Its a small side project to thier real stuff, but I dig it.

Aterciopelados were a great little indie punk band about ten years ago. The music holds up well. Ken, give them a listen.

Cabas is an interesting mix of cumbia and rock.

Not a Colombian band, but los Toreos Muertos from Spain were an amazingly funny Violent Femmish/They Might be Giantish kinda thing. Aguitas Amarillas, Pilar, and No me Llamo Javier are hilarious. Jello Biafra is/was their pal.

The Plugz from the late 1970s and early 1980s were a great mexican punk band. Hombre Secreto and El Clavo y el Cruz on the Repo Man soundtrack. Hell, the whole soundtrack.

I think Lamento Boliviano, all though heavily played, is still a great rock song in spanish.

Genitallica were funny in their day. Que Fue Lo Que Paso still cracks me up.

Esoda Estereo from Argentina were a pretty good group.

Cool thanks for the list.

I know they love metal and punk in South America, but I've only heard a few bands from there.

Try estopa from Spain. Not so much punk, but they rock in a flamenco sort of way.

Hi Rocco,
Not sure about your knowledge of older UK music but you could try Joy Division and a Scottish band called the Skids-the latter were new wave and my favourite song of theirs (it is on youtube) is Scared To Dance. This song is from 79 and the guitar of Stuart Adamson (later in Big Country, God bless his soul) is super duper!
Another band worthy of investigation for Americans would be Free, as they were not well known in the States other than THE single.
The Jam were hardly known in the US, try their stuff; Paul Weller the eternal mod.
If you would like to hear a band that could only ever make it in the UK, try Dr. Feelgood. They played R and B in such a way that even the Brit punks liked them!
Fleetwood Mac-Peter Green version rather than the Americanised version. Greeney may well have surpassed Clapton if the drugs had not freaked him into a zombie state for decades-such a shame!
Am I barking up the right tree with these things Rocco? If not, will try again later!

I see one poster has mentioned Cabas. My wife likes him; I just find his music a confusing mess of influences and he appears to not have an identity of his own. Hendrixy guitar to Latin, for me horrible. Only Santana can get away with things like that and he should not try to compete with such a master.

Molotov is Mexican, but good.

La Huella would probably have the best information on Colombian bands -- should show up here soon.
