Any colombians in the NW of the US?

Hi

I was wondering if some of the pbh posters live in the NW area (OR or WA).

I know one, my wife, who sometimes feels like the only one this side of Miami.

Clearly that's not quite the case, but spotting Colombians in Seattle isn't quite as easy as spotting gringos in Bogota.

The beautiful Pacific Northwest! greetings, I was in Seattle for six of the last seven years. Wish I was there right now with Hurricane Wilma heading our way! Only person I ever met from Colombia was a gal I always ran into on the public transportation Sound Transit. I would always talk to her on my way to work at Seatac. She had attended the UW and stayed in Seattle when she finished school. She spoke often about her family living in Bucaramanga. I was amazed how politically astute and conservative she was. Oh yeah, She was very beautiful as well! Viva Colombia!

Hehehe Tell Francia if it makes her feel better I feel the same way sometimes.

Have you guys visit the Juan Valdes in Seatle?
I also saw in a website that there is a colombian restaurant in Seatle.

I dont know if its the same for her, but everytime I feel homesick if I see something colombian, hear a colombian song or eat frijolitos con arroz y arepita it makes me feel a lot better!

b Bruce you can always come back to the NW! No hurricanes ;o).

I dont know guys the weather in other states may be better but I really really love it here. I love everything about Portland (except to carry my umbrella all the time).

I miss the Cascades! The Pacific Northwest is a very beautiful place. From my home in Fife, Washington. I could open my drapes and see Mt. Rainier in the distance. The Olympic Peninsula, The Colombia River, I miss the hiking and fly fishing the most. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of visiting Colombia the country not the river! I have made some wonderful friends in Barranquilla and Santa Marta. Once I finish my studies in June 2006 (hurricanes permitting)I plan on moving to Santa Marta. Even with a reconstructed right hip I intend to hike up in the Sierra Nevada De Santa Marta(bad guys permitting)The rains of winter where you are aren't that big of a deal. Perfect evenings to stretch out on the couch with a good book. The summers in the Pacific Northwest I am sure you will agree are to die for!!! Viva Colombia!

I've noticed periodically that Colombian errantes (that's a joke) around the world are sometimes looking for paisanos (countrymen) in the places they reside. Well, here's a link to Colombian restaurants around the world. If there's a restaurant, there have to be Colombians as well. Bon Apetit.

El Señor Juan Valdez vive en Seattle... We want to la casa de Juan Valdez today in downtown Seattle. It looks like a Starbucks only with a different color scheme. Business must be off to a slow start because the manager asked if we knew any other Colombians in Seattle and if so, to send them on over. We told him, we'd spread the word, though we still don't know too many Colombians in this area.

I'll post a pic or two as soon as I download my camera.

We did find a web-site for other eventos latinos at Fiesta Seattle that has links to some resturants and clubs with salsa music. So clearly my wife isn't the only Colombian here in the Seattle area.

Thats cool! I wish we had a Juan Valdes in this area as well... I hope they dont go out of business... Send everyone over! ;)

Next time you go can you please find out if they sell those handbags (that look more like grocery bags) with the Juan valdez logo on them? I brought one from Colombia and it became my favorite purse (thought Seth called it the grocery bag... we agreed at the end on just call it Juan Valdes), but now its all beaten so I want to get a new one.

So Bob please if you go there see if you find one and maybe I can send you money or soemthing and you mail it to me ;) ... sorry to be asking I just really love them.

We may be going to Seattle next month or at the beginning of January...

Saludos :)

Seattle My wife is from Medellin and I have been going to Colombia for the past five years. We have met a few Colombians here in the Seattle area. There is a Colombian restrante in Renton called Mexicali. They serve the best Colombian food in the Seattle area. If anybody in the area wants to hang out sometime let me know. I work at the FedEx in Seattle, not too long ago there was a tour of Latin American businees people and there was four people form Medellin. Currently I am study at Seattle Central Community College.

Oh, and if you are in Seattle, don't miss one of the architectural wonders of the world... no, not the freakin' Space Needle.... I'm talkin' about the new SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Don't miss the Mixing Chamber or the four story Books Spiral! There are eleven levels in all.

The Books Spiral is a series of flat tiers, connected by gentle ramps. A gradual slope of about 2 degrees winds through the four floors of book stacks. The majority of the nonfiction collection — 75 percent of the entire collection — is located on the Books Spiral. This allows the nonfiction collection to be housed in one continuous run, and avoids the problem of having to move books into other rooms or floors when various subject areas expand. The spiral is an architectural organization that allows all patrons — including people with disabilities — the freedom to move throughout the entire collection without depending on stairs, escalators and elevators.

Oh, ummm, gotta run... I'm goin' to the local lbrary!

I ain't colombian but I lived in Burien, Wa. at the end of the Sea-Tac runway back in the mid 70's and sometimes I felt like I was the only Yankee in town. I loved the people, they're more progressive than these here Southerners but the rain is too much. That area of the country has the highest suicide rate during the rainy months, which I think is like 13 months long. So keep thinking happy thought's during the rain.

In the mean time I have rented my property here in Georgia and I will be moving to Connecticutt next week. I think it will be easier for her to acclimate there rather than here in rural Georgia. I have not seen snow in 17 years and in parts of CT. they have 8 feet of snow. The people are different too. They're taciturn and I'm expecting a bit of culture shock and I'll have to get use to their accent

So, silviat, that increases the known Colombian population up here in the northwest to 3!

Specially because it was suprising... We are not supose to receive snow here in portland... specially in my area of town. And also when it snows its never supose to be more than 1/2 inch... well I dont know how much snow is out there but its definately a lot. Ane everything looks so cute and so different and so white. I'm pretty hipnotized.

Anyway now I am going back to packing because tomorrow we are heading to spend the holidays in OH... where I am going to get to see a lot of this white scene.

Happy holidays everyone... :)

It's in "Renton" not "Redmond"

Mexi Cali
239 Sunset Blvd N
Renton, WA 98055
Phone: (425) 917-8886

Or you can click here to see the map. The food is OK. The Mexican food is better than the Colombian food, but because it's closer than Miami, on those days you find you really need a Bandeja Paisa fix, it'll do in a pinch. Buen provecho!

Monpirri says on Feb 23, 2006, 13:49:

That's because you were raised that way There's no comparison, between the two cuisines, or maybe they are identical cuisines or both have the same dishes?
One had humongous capital investment in advertising in the states and the other one is practically unknown abroad by foreigners. And one has a large selection of fast food for the consumer market in the United States.
Colombian cuisine is very regional, it is hard to generalize it in one plate and I also believe every country has great cooking!

Whoa there.... I'm not saying ALL Mexican food is better than ALL Colombian food. Just that at this resturant, which happens to serve both, their mexican food is better than their Colombian food.

While I may not qualify as a connoseur of Colombian cooking, I've had better "Colombian" dishes at other resturaunts in the U.S. and Colombia (as has my Colombian wife). On the other hand, the chimichanga I had there a while back was the best I've ever had.

Neither is bad, just that it might not be like mama made.

I actually liked it a lot. Someone (I think it's above in this same thread) said it was really bad, but for me it does it. I know that out of Colombia I have little to no chances of finding something like La Fonda Paisa of Bucaramanga. So I am not "exigente"

Plus if someone wants to know what a bad colombian restaurant tastes like you should go to the one in Santiago de Chile... yuuckky salty and their "beans with rice" had white beans instead of red.

hmmm ... a cooks view To me Colombian cooking isn't very exciting, it is rather bland, when I cook Colombian I enhance it. Those who know me know I did extensive resaerch and cooked many resional dishes. I have also discussed the recipes with my Colombian friends, they all become rather clueless when I talk about enhancing the flavors.

Mexican cooking cannot be compared at all, a totaly diferent style. But Bolivean and Peruvian styles should fall into that category, but they don't. Argentinean cooking is the closest, but Colombia leaves out the spices and herbs.

I translated a few Colombian cookbooks ... they are boring.

You must visit my mom when she is cooking, well now my sister, and once you have tried their delicious cooking, they are going to have to chase you out the kitchen, they do the same to me and tell me to wait!
For the record, just go to Cartagena and see what do find out there. Queen and King of Spain were in Cartagena last year tasting Colombian cuisine and they were very pleased.
But, you don't have to go to Cartagena, go to any city in Colombia and look for Comida criolla. A simple test, just try one of the humongous tamales and check out all the ingredients and preparation that in entails to create one of this dishes.
The fact is that Colombian food is not been exploited to its fullness is because Colombians have not commercialized to point to make it international. They have other current domestic problems on their hands.
Despite the fact of the current situation, there is a slow and progressive change in this field, as we speak, they are trying to get it together.
Last week, however, there was another culinary convention in Colombian with Colombian Chefs who were cooking dishes from the different regions of Colombia.
I say, you should get in touch with gastronomist and critic Kendon MacDonald and you would find a different story about not exciting and bland food?? Chef Kendon, just put out a CD "Sabores de Colombia" Or if you are the daring type, just go and travel to Cali, Los Llanos, Medellin, Buraramanga, Barranquilla, Manizales, Santa Marta, La Guajira, etc, etc.

We're Everywhere You just have to look hard. But then it's like yellow car syndrome. People see my bracelets and rush through the crowd to ask me about them.

I've lived in England, Scotland, Texas, and California and always found Colombians. There were a lot in London, I was even surprised to see a small Colombian restaurant at a train station. In Houston there was a Colombian restaurant down the street from my house, and we knew of a lot more (this wasn't a hispanic only area, but then most of Texas is probably partly Hispanic anyway).

I'll admit Los Angeles has been a little tougher, and the few restaurants I went to I wasn't very impressed with, but from talking with friends at the grocery store and such I've discovered there's pockets in LA that are filled with mostly Colombians (right next to the pockets of Salvadoreans, Dominicans, etc).

At my University the year I came in there were at least 7 of us. A few graduated, but more came in. Mostly recruits for the golf and tennis teams. Through them I met the sports recruits at the other universities.

I've basically lived outside of Colombia since the fith grade, so I've learned to be on the lookout for things from home. The friends I have made who just came to the US feel like they are alone and they should resign themselves to forgetting Colombia while they're here. They're always surprised when I take them out and show them that you can find places that play your music and sell your food.

Tell your friends If they would live in Portland they would understand what is "lack of colombians."

I think I've met a good percentage of the colombians in town and that is abot 20-25 people. There's no such a thing as colombian supermarket, my best hope is to find some products (similar to colombians but not quite the same) in the latin market. And finally, the closest colombian restaurant is at a 3 hours drive...

Maybe by comparison that will make them feel better ;)

By the way. Colombians in this forum in the portland area that want details about the 20th of july celebration please write your emails. I don't have all of the details yet but I am trying to make a list so I can notify people.

Anyway, I'll be posting the info here.

The pearl district isn't very big so just go ask someone. The people there might be able to tell you about where you can find some colombians. Also they are probably showning the World cup there right now so you might even meet someone there. I don't think you will have much luck in Beaverton though. There are Brazilians in Lake Oswego, I think Cafe Brasil is closed now, but that use to be the Brazilian hang out. Sorry you might have already met all the Colombians in Portland already. The big immigrant comm. are mostly Asian and Central American.
