Anthony Bourdain "No Reservations" travels to Medellin!

Best-selling author, reluctant food celebrity guy, culinary adventurer, drinker, smoker, hedonist ... the list of descriptors could go on and on. But one thing is certain: In this food-obsessed world, Anthony Bourdain has carved out a distinct place as a gastronomic Indiana Jones. His quest for the perfect dining experience was smartly documented in his television series and book, A Cook's Tour. And now Bourdain's journey is shifting to the next course.

In Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, his journey takes him to people and places far beyond the realm of food. Following his wanderlust will take the audience to far-out and familiar places, from Iceland to Vietnam and Tuscany to the Pacific Northwest.

Anthony Bourdain is and has been a professional chef and writer for more than three decades, and his point of view will always reflect that experience. But in Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, this anti-celebrity chef is out of the kitchen ... on the road ... no holds barred.

Bourdain travels the world seeking the authentic experiences and food that flavor the world's cultures. Join him on his journey when he visits Medellin, Colombia on March 5th at Teatro Metropolitano. Anthony Bourdain will speak about tourism, culinary tips, anthropology, and well as sharing his humorous travel experiences from around the world.

I love that show - "No Reservations". Am I assuming correctly that a show will be shot in Medellin? Or is Mr. Bourdain just giving a speech there? And if he is shooting a show there, any idea when it will air?

SiV says on Mar 2, 2008, 21:41:

So what's he gonna eat? Bandeja paisa? He should come to Cali and try a decent cazuela de mariscos.

Ditto - whatstaeat! Bandeja, Ajiajo, Cheesy Arepa, Empanadas - ?????????

Bourdain and his daft 'hipster' patter, his tough guy fantasies, the way he talks to his crew like they're serfs and morons...

Wanker.

A trip to Bucaramanga to eat hormigas culonas seems closer to his style...

I have no idea who this guy is because I don't own a TV, but it seems people really like his show. I've probably got more emails regarding any of my posts on either of my websites.

Does he do a show at each location he traveles to?

He does.

I watched a couple on cable last year in Colombia.

His book, Kitchen Confidentials, is a fun read.

SiV says on Mar 3, 2008, 07:50:

I like the guy and his show, but I saw his show in the Dom Rep(?) where he went with a local hero boxer to eat frijoles there. He didn't look blown away by them.

His honesty, true delight in adventure, and self-deprecating humor are so refreshing in today's world of superstar chefs and pompous restaurateurs. I hope he does a show in Colombia ,if for no other reason than to help people realize that Colombian (or any other South American country) food is nothing like Mexican food as most of the world thinks.

There are lots of things Bourdain could eat in Medellin besides bandeja paisa. Mondongo isn't something most gringos in the US would eat or have heard of. Same with sopa de menudencias. Morcilla would gross out the average gringo if they knew what they were eating. Think of all of the fruits that most people north of Mexico have never heard of that he could sample. He will surely sample the aguardiente, since drinking the local liquor is a big part of his show. That can't hurt aguardiente Antioqueno exports. He could eat lechona (sp), whole fried fish, chorizos, picada from a roadside tienda - I think it is cool somebody is promoting the Medellin area and Colombia. His ticket prices seem a little steep though.

beisbollover says on Mar 3, 2008, 09:41:

I have seen many of his shows (Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Tuscany, Argentina) and loved them all. His rebellious style is cool. I really appreciate how much he enjoys learning about local food. The food we all eat everyday. Not the stuff only the rich can afford in the finest restaurants. I also like that he doesn't try to improve it but to just savor it as it is. The dirtier and "street" the food is the more he enjoys it.

Mononoke28 says on Mar 3, 2008, 09:45:

Oh that is aweeeeesome, I love his show!!!

the tickets range from 83mil to 168mil. Bit crazy if you ask me.

What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been

mranderson says on Mar 3, 2008, 10:30:

I've seen his show once. I thought he just did his show in the street walking around and trying different foods. So he just going to go to a theater? And then what? People just bring him food to try? Sounds boring. Sounds really boring for 80.000 pesos.

If he is on the streets in Medellin then that sounds like fun.

robi666 says on Mar 3, 2008, 10:31:

I was asking myself exactly the same, mranderson.

jaramillo says on Mar 3, 2008, 10:41:

I've caught his show a number of times. There ain't much in Medallo to impress the guy. He's had mondongo in more ways than one can imagine.
