NCAA Bans Indian Mascots, Nicknames From Postseason Events
Aug 5, 7:32 PM (ET) Email this Story

By MICHAEL MAROT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Fed up with what it considers "hostile" and "abusive" American Indian nicknames, the NCAA announced Friday it would shut those words and images out of postseason tournaments, a move that left some school officials angry and threatening legal action.

Starting in February, any school with a nickname or logo considered racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" by the NCAA would be prohibited from using them in postseason events. Mascots will not be allowed to perform at tournament games, and band members and cheerleaders will also be barred from using American Indians on their uniforms beginning in 2008.

Major college football teams are not subject to the ban because there is no official NCAA tournament.

Affected schools were quick to complain, and Florida State - home of the Seminoles - threatened legal action.

"That the NCAA would now label our close bond with the Seminole people as culturally 'hostile and abusive' is both outrageous and insulting," Florida State president T.K. Wetherell said in a statement.

"I intend to pursue all legal avenues to ensure that this unacceptable decision is overturned, and that this university will forever be associated with the 'unconquered' spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida," he added.

The committee also recommended that schools follow the examples of Wisconsin and Iowa by refusing to schedule contests against schools that use American Indian nicknames.

While NCAA officials admit they still can't force schools to change nicknames or logos, they are making a statement they believe is long overdue. Eighteen mascots, including Florida State's Seminole and Illinois' Illini, were on the list of offenders.

Those schools will not be permitted to host future NCAA tournament games, and if events have already been awarded to those sites, the school must cover any logos or nicknames that appear.

It's just football I know some people take college sports seriously but you really think you'd rather deal with problems lik guerillas, death squads, mass displacement, children begging in the street, murder and rampant corruption to avoid a little collegiate Political Correctness?

P.C. has been going on since the dark ages when I was in college. It's just one of those phases college kids go through (like the 6-month-long attempt at vegetarianism and freshman year lesbianism). Oh, and by the way, political correctness exists on Colombian campuses, too.

I guess the point is that we have been using these names for more than a century, now a handful of winey asses decide that it is not good for the university to use a tribal name. That is crap !!! I am half cherokee and I am not offended, as a matter of fact they should be happy that they are even represented. Would the mass majority of the population even know there was a indian tribe called the Illini or Seminoles ? I think not. We had a tribe in Illinois that the Kickapoo tribe. Outside a street in my home town, nobody ever heard of them. I guess the University of Illinois did not want to be the Kickapoos, perhaps it would have made it too easy for the compitition. Just my 2 cents

A handful of whiney asses? Somehow I doubt the NCAA caved under to only a "handful of whiney asses."

Personally, I can see why native americans would be offended by names like "The Redskins," which is kind of like having a team called "The honkies", and I have a much harder timing seeing why they'd be offended by a team called "The Seminoles." The only other ethnic name I can think of that's attached to a sports team is the "Fighting Irish" which makes me wonder why the fascination with native american names in the first place.

I do know from a completely different realm that native Americans do find it offensive when their ethnic and tribal names are attached to consumer products and I can understand why. I don't think other ethnic groups would stand idly by if they named the next baseball expansion team the "Detroit Dagos" or if Mazda came out with the Mazda Arab.

The college I graduated from was founded in 1851 and was orginally called 'Cherokee National Female Seminary' (although today it is open to men and women and all races......their sport teams' name? 'Redmen'. The college I used to teach at (a million years ago, in my previous life) at one time claimed that more American Indians have attented it than all other US colleges (combined? or one-on-one? That part I can't remember).....their teams' name? 'Warriors'.....none of the Indians at those two schools that I was aware of (and beleive me, there were plenty) seemed to take any offense. Personally, I'm not in to sports, couldn't care less, if I had a free ticket to a game, I'd give it away. However, isn't the idea of naming a sport team supposed to be to use a name that instills pride and show strength, skill and bravery? How can those attributes be 'offensive'?

Lostgringo says on Aug 7, 2005, 09:16:

strenght and bravery Michael you have summed all this up very well. But here is another take on this foolishnes. You, it seems, are not racist. Therefore you look upon these names as reprenting something good. On the outher hand, the persons wanting to change these names are themselves racist. Therefore the names mean something completly different to them.

I think many Americans have either blood related "native status" or at least heve come in touch with North American natives in a positive way. I remember attending a Powwow in Canada with a few young natives. I worked in a halfway house at the time with Young Offenders.

What struck me as most interesting is that the natives of the US were so proud of who they were. There were mostly teenagers at this event..they were playing basketball. During the intermission, some of the young men went over to a stereo they had and played some Rap music. What followed was amazing. The all started to dance like in a Powwow to the music. The kids with me were totally amazed..their mouths dropped and their eyes were fixated on these boys.

At that time Canadian natives were just starting to advance themselves in terms learning their culture and having pride in themselves. Canadians I think, are still behind according to Natives in the US. Bottom line, and I think Michael would agree...you take away all of these wonderful and meaningful names away for teams and you take away some of the "good" history regarding Native Americans.

What's next..take away "Bulls" because it offends Animal rights..what about the Chicago Black Hawks? Bloody foolishness if you ask me. Like GIB mentioned these idiots have too much time on their hands. I said Idiot GIB didn't lol.

The lobbyist have stopped smoking in the bars in Canada. Most are empty now and owners have steadly being losing money. They will soon be able to stop you smoking on the street and next in your own home. Makes you wonder sometimes just how free we really are..................

I actually consider myself one of those marginalized peoples, 1 in 10 of my nations males were put to death systematically; yet I know we probably did our share of killing and maiming too, we displaced, killed or assimilated groups who came before us. I am not proud of it either way.

I'm a little late for my two cents But Allow me to embellish on what UTC said. He is correct, blame the liberals for this chapter of political correctness. It's just another sphere that they wish to stink their noses in as they endeavor to "right" every wrong that has ever been done to eveyone.

I hear ya man, it is EXACTY things like the author of this thread points out, that make me want to pack it in and head to places like Colombia where this stuff doesn't exist.

Michael_B, you have to understand, things in this country are going drastically wrong. I too am an active member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. I attended the Chicago Campus back when it was called "The Circle". While I recognize that our chief Illiniwek
has been under attack for a few years, and now I fear that he may be gone. A small group of Indians contend we are exploting one of their people. Such crap. I am sick of this too.

This all adds up as to why you have to stop voting for liberals. If liberals in this country ever take over, you will see much more of the same. You might even have your income tax rasied so we can pay reperatons to people that (1) we never did anything to and (2) that have never in any way been vicitimized but for the fact that they want to claim injury for something they never even lived to winess.

The Message: Keep liberals out of Government.

Gomezman5 says on Aug 7, 2005, 17:38:

Not really Kernow..It's like Las Vegas Winners in everything always brag and even exagerate their winnings. Loosers even lie, to portray themselves as winners. Nobody ever hears from those who lose. When a lawyer looses a case, neithr he or the media mention a word.

Likewise, when people go to Vegas, they always come back talking about their winnings. Do the losers? Never. Or they phrase it differently. They say "I budgeted myself, I only planned on spending x amount per day." That's a nice way of not admitting their losses.

In other words, the justice system in this country works a lot better than you or anyone might think. Once a week I read the "Jury verdict rerporter" for Cook County. You would be shocked if I told you how often people sue for money damages in car accident cases, and the insurance comapany does not offer enough, or they will not settle, and then the case goes to trial for a day or two, and then a few hours later, the Jury comes back with a not guilty/liable verdict. In that case, the lawyer spend 4 or 5 years working up a case to bring to trial and then.....the jury sifts through the facts and does the right thing....

Bottom line: Good lawyers work hard to win. They even lose when they should win. Bad lawyers are out there, but they are few and far between. You just hear about the bad lawyers more than the good ones, so you think there are a lot more bad lawyers than there actually are

Michael all you need is lots of tolerance! You don't have to leave a place (USA or Colombia or Timbuctu) because people are offended by a word - on this very thread - People have tried to defend/attack liberals, republicans, colombians, americans, football teams, beer companies! If you learn to be tolerant you can learn to be friends with all sorts of people and that makes your life much more fun and enjoyable - I have republicans, conservatives, catholics etc. etc. as friends (along with liberals, non-religious, tree huggers - lol) and they know that I am a liberal athiest! We don't get too emotional about most things and can enjoy a beer or two together and discuss a little (we try and leave the discussions at a civilized level most times.)
Enjoy this world Michael - don't get offended by people's individual likes and dislikes and beliefs and faiths - right or wrong! Heck my fiancee is a catholic colombian about to marry an athiest, but she does enjoy a beer with me at times! jejeje
