another 'colombian trait'

(This is just one example of behaviour I have seen quite often in colombians with whom I am travelling):

'M' is visiting me here in BsAs. First day we walk by the local park (in the heart of the city) and she sees dozens of women in skimpy bikinis suntanning.

She seems fascinated by this. She asks if this is normal behaviour? Sure I tell her, because it is. The parks are full of skimpily dressed women, and sometimes men, suntanning.

I can see the wheels turning. She asks where the nearest shopping mall is. Off we go. She heads straight for the bikini store, tries on about 5, buys one, and says she wants to go back to the park.

Not surprisingly, I don't have a problem with our new plan for the day.

So I don't even know how to describe this 'trait', but it's something about wanting to do whatever the locals are doing, like drinking maté or whatever, but even more so when it involves wearing skimpy clothes and suntanning.

To me it seems like a sort of innocence, maybe just a desire to experience what goes on in other countries, and it's exaggerated for people like M, who rarely has the chance to travel.

It's quite charming I think, and no, I won't post any photos.

Podborski The literal meaning of the word 'sensate' is 'able to feel sensation'.

But at my university we had a tutor who used the word to describe people who took gratification from their immediate environment; that is to say, people who really enjoyed the simple pleasures. Like sunbathing, a good meal, a glass of wine (or cup of maté)...

Perhaps that's a word that could describe M's trait.

I think you have it kalder and it describes me as well.

Maybe it's just with some colombianas I know it is mixed with a kind of delight in experiencing something new, a kind of naivete maybe.

Whatever, it's much nicer than, say, a californian´s attitude of being too cool to be surprised or delighted by anything.

I have to laugh at the idea of them trying something new. My wife doesn't try anything new - it's the tried and true and Colombian for her. She'll be one of those characters who's lived here for 40 years and it's like she's fresh off the banana boat.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

well it's not exactly new UC I mean the sunbathing is nothing new, but doing it in a park beside a very busy street in the middle of the city is, I imagine.

This girl is a bit different from other colombianas I know, she actually tried some spicy curry, and seemed to like it, or at least not hate it.

But she did bring a whole bunch of colombian snacks with her, and this morning she plopped a bunch of cheese in her coffee...uggghhh...

I'd send you a photo ermlo but I know I'd see it posted all over PBH by tonight.

(BTW, she didn't want to be seen in the same bikini in the same place 2 days in a row, so today she's wearing a super short mini skirt and a tiny, tiny top. nyah nyah)
