My boyfriend & I are planning a two-week trip on our way back from Ecuador to Colombia in July/Aug - he wants to trek around in the Andes. I traveled to the major cities in 2000 and had a wonderful time, but am a little more concerned about the campo - especially since I don't have any rural connections. Can anyone recommend good hiking territory that is perhaps less likely to be dangerous? Many thanks!

Unless you have a local with you who knows the area, current events and that you trust, I'd be extremely wary venturing out into the countryside for extended treks (and I speak spanish/have Colombian heritage). The Ecuadorian Andes are probably better suited for solo-trekking and have more facilities.

I actually just came back from an 8 day trekking in Cocuy and during Semana Santa (Holy week) I will be going on an 8 day trip in Los Nevados.
