And the winner is....

Not sure why but Costa Rica seems to have topped the most recent Happy Planet Index list for the being the happiest place to live with the runner up being the Dominican Republic followed by Jamaica, Guatemala and Vietnam with Colombia coming in at sixth place.

The funny thing about this happyplanet index is that it's not a survey, it's an academic exercise on how happy people in undeveloped countries should feel about living a reasonably long lives; wasting so little and using up so little of global resources. It says NOTHING about how happy people actually are or how happy they perceive themselves.

PCL...that plastic bag full of garbage that you drop down the poop chute at the end of the hall where you are living is then opened up by someone and gone through carefully and anything of value is recycled. What goes to the dump is purely useless.

You are correct. CR is expensive and has waaaay too many gringos there now. In fact one of the upscale suburbs of San Jose is called Escazu. It has now been renamed "Gringazu." Crime is rampant in all of CR, particularly in the Central Valley. I have a place in Cartago and it's still relatively calm there. But, I'm not 100% happy there either. It's much cooler than the valley and it rains every fokkin afternoon. Takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to SJ centro. Depending on traffic.
