I have read many comment about people wanting to find good Peanut Butter in Bogota. I wonder if several of us might chip in to buy a commercial mill. The cost is about $1200 USD. The owners could get their PB at the cost of the nuts and a profit made on sales to others. What do you think??

Yes but if things seem good for me then maybe they could be good for others, I have no interest in capitalizing on any more ideas

With all those fresh fruits in Colombia you may as well get a food dehydrater too.

That is the Mill I was thinking about. It is way out of my low dollar rate, price range. Hence the IDEA. While I could cover 20% or so the other 80% is out of reach

Bill Turley says on Jun 6, 2008, 12:27:

Nope they are hard to find infact The best I have found is /th Augusto area market in Bogota. PB Fans think of this 4lbs peanuts, 1 lb cashew, .5 lb brazil nuts with a little corn syrup if needed ( or melao). I think I could find a local ( my sister in law's) near Bulevar Niza where we could park a machine.

but i've found that colombians don't really like peanut butter.

is there any market research on who the target market will be?

My last trip to Bogota we made p&j sandwiches and some other peanut butter treats for the neighborhood kids, mind you this was using the not-so-great stuff they sell in Exito, they loved it. Many of the kids had never tasted peanut butter before and I do remember that we searched for quite a while in the store before we came upon the one or two selections they offer.
I seem to recall that Sour Cream was another food item they readily took to once we found it and presented it over plates of nachos....mmmmm!
Really good idea.

Is peanut butter made from peanuts that have been soaked in some kind of brine (I think this is where the salt comes from) and then roasted and shelled? Or do they skip the brine stage, roast them, shell them and then grind them?

Bill Turley says on Jun 6, 2008, 16:44:

Both are easily made with our own machine. If we can find good grape jelly or preseves why not. Actually the cruncy is just adding some nuts near the end of the process

Well all this planning is great but the ideas are moot if there arn't enough people with $$ that are interested in setting this up. I spoke with my sister-in-law whos owns Productos Mua in Bogota and she is thinking of getting a larger locale and would be willing to discuss the idea of housing the machine there.

this is not anything real difficult................at Makro in bogota they sell the commercial mixing machine for about $400 usd. a few mason jars................some labels from my mac 's graphic program....................................and we're in business.

i like that 'marshmellow fluff' stuff also. it's like melted marshmellows; i'm not sure if they still sell that stuff in the states....but i loved it with peanut butter. a triple decker, pb and jelly between two slices of bread, and then the fluff and another slice of bread to close it up........delicioso!!!

here is a good slogan:

"Oh you need fluff, fluff, fluff to make
a fluffer nutter,
Marshmallow fluff and lots of peanut butter.
First you spread, spread, spread your bread
with peanut butter,
Add marshmallow fluff and have a fluffernutter.
When you enjoy, joy, joy your fluff
and peanut butter,
You're glad you have enough for another
fluffernutter. "

gringoloid,

Not a great target market, as people from he UK don't generally like peanut butter, so I expect many other foreigners are the same, there aren't that many Americans in Colombia, certainly VERY few in any one area.

My sister-in -Law has her locale near Bulavar Niza. The only time that need be considered is when I bring my own back to paradise. If however this is a better location I would be willing to host it too. Gloria and I with Wrinkles, are the only family here at the momment.
