American traveling to Medellin

I am going to be in/around Medellin for 10 days in March. Any suggestions on how to dress for the weather and culture? ( I am female, 36 yrs.) Do I need to worry about dress codes in restaurants? I currently live near Baltimore and DC so I am accustomed to worrying about dress codes. Thanks!

Well you are a Gringa and Colombians will expect you to dress like a Gringa lol. Truthfully, I had the same thoughts the first time went to Colombia. All you need is a good pair of jeans and shorts. Just relax and enjoy. Buy your clothes there. They are so cheap there and in fashion. Unless you go to a real fancy restaurant you will not have to worry about dress codes too much. I hope you have a great time.

Paisas are pretty informal but women pay a lot of attention to their looks. Better to get there and see what you feel like. Clothing is inexpensive. Weather will be late-spring like. Can get warm (mid 80s) in the afternoon, but it usually cools down in the evening.

GRACE,
All the opinions are true above expect the birthday suit. Weather is spring like. Can shower. But yes I suggest buying some things there. Very casual. I see your from Balto/DC. I have three restaurants around there. Back channel me for directions and some wine if you like on me.
Also I will be back in Medellin sometime this month into next myself, let me know, I just went halves on a little helado place there also.
Good luck ! You will enjoy!

Peace

no, the birthday suit opinion was true too.

Catfish, where are your restaurants and what are they called? If they are not expensive I might check it out.

Day: casual- a tank, jeans and flip flops..its warm enough for shorts but not as many people wear them

Night: A little more dressed up. like everyone has said the women from Medellin take pride in looking goo so I would put on a pair of heels and a tad nicer shirt or tank with jeans

leave the shorts at home (and flip flops). bring the designer blue jeans and sporty yet casual tops. evenings are good for a light sweater or light jacket. if you go back up toward the airport (rio negro, llano grande), bring a slightly heavier sweater and the same light jacket should make for a good combo. bring a good compact umbrella - it has dried up lately, but who knows around here these days......

* bring some comfortable walking shoes for the day and some nicer dress shoes for the night.

** some of the women here go overboard on their superfly, supertight outfits. best not to follow in their footsteps, especially with the high heels some of them wear ;)

Casual sporty look for warmer daylight hours; much nicer clothes for evening, especially if you'll be a guest for dinner at someone's house; piercings or tatoos are a big NO... unless you're 19; most middle-class Colombians your age dress well and wear some make up, so the just-out-of-the-shower look will get you some stares. Take a nice jacket or wrap for the ocassional evening chill. Have lots of fun!

Wow, that conversation degenerated quickly since I last checked this post! I guess I should have expected it. .. . I walked into this one a bit naive... ..."Oh my, what does a nice girl from America wear in the big strange country of Colombia?".. . anyway,
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. The spiderman/mask combo sound good. Maybe I'll go with that.
Post my picture? I'll think about it. These internet chat things are new to me.

Seriously, I checked out your Genovas link. What are the other restaurants that you "have"?

Grace,
If you checked my website today it is down on some stuff, sorry. How did I know? Just figured a you were the type to run around Colombia in a Spiderman mask and thong and likes to drink grape juice!

Good Luck!
