American Reguirements for Columbia

What are the requirements for a person from the United States going to Bogota? I have a passport, but do I need any sort of visa/permission?

Also, would they allow me to bring a handgun? How accessible are handguns in Columbia (just wondering how many locals have them, since I probably can't take mine)?

One more thing: Do they allow knives? If so, what is the legal length/fuctionaly limit for it to be considered a "weapon" as opposed to a tool?

And one more: Do they allow collapseable batons? How about Mace?

What does customs do when you enter? Do they search your entire luggage? Do I need to have a list of my items that I'm bringing in?

Sorry if this is a repost.

wow, I mispelled Requirements :(

Also... You also misspelled "Colombia"... ;-)

U.S. citizens will only need their U.S. passports to enter Colombia as a tourist. No special visas are required, however there is a time limit to your total length of stay. I am sure someone here can provide the exact specifics.

Guns/Knives/Mace/ect... --- I am not sure, but I have a hunch that the answer to your question is no. I could be wrong, but I don't think that concealed weapons permit holders have reciprocity with foreign countries -- like we have in the U.S. between states.

Before you arrive, you will be given a form to fill out during the flight -- some of the questions will relate to what items you are bringing into the country. When you enter, you will present the completed form and your passport to the customs agent, they might ask you a couple of simple questions. But essentially it's an easy process.

They very well might search your luggage, including bomb/drug sniffing dogs that walk throughout the airport.

weapons Forget the weapons. Might consider packing some pepper spray in your checked bagage, in your shave bag. Consider this, in a situation, any weapon you have can be taken away from you and used on you. Be cool, don't piss people of, stay away from bad spots........ I've lived in Colombia now for over 1 year and have had no trouble or threat of trouble. Traveled to Bogota, Manizales, Pereria and Armenia. In Bogota for 8 bucks an hour + gas I use a private driver and car. Super comfortable and not obvious. Money well spent.

Forget the GUN and Weapons PERIOD! Ignore this advice and remember and utter this phrase when you enter La Modelo, "El cárcel es magnifico. Mucho mejor que mi habiticón del hotel." USA carry permits do NOT extended to Colombia and without a cedula do NOT even think of applying for one.

Pepper spray is prohibited in carry on baggage as are gun and ammo. (Mace/Pepper Spray - One 118 ml or 4 Fl. oz. container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Firearms - firearms carried as checked baggage MUST be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container, and declared to the airline at check-ammunition - Check with your airline or travel agent to see if ammunition is permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are flying. If ammunition is permitted, it must be declared to the airline at check-in. Small arms ammunition for personal use must be securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition)

If you feel the need of anything pepper spray might do it, as long as it is not taken away any then placed where the sun don't shine.
When you go through customs and you hit the button pray for a green light.

BTW, if you are that nervous why even go??

I don´t know about Columbia... ... but here in COLOMBIA (with o, in case you didn't know), most people don't carry guns, and my advice will be DONT TRY TO BRING, BUY, RENT or CARRY any kind of weapons... this will just get you killed.

This is really stupid, a gringo with a gun gets stoped in medellin downtown, they try to rob him, he gets away. 20 minutes later they'll be looking for you on a bike with uzis and SMG's... "this gringo is carryng a gun, sure he's CIA, he's Military, let's get him and sell him to the guerrilla"

Please4, don't do anything as stupyd as carryng a weaspon here, please!!!!

most americans i know, never get to see armed people in colombia, but if you do, the sure will use thir guns against you, and i assure you they have better aim and less remorse. Don't do it

man, i'm colombian, i`m talle than most colombians, i know medellin, i've traveled a few and i know my city. I wouldn't carry a gun in medellin unless i wanted to get killed.

If they are gonna kidnap you, they'll bring AK's... If they're gonna rob you, there's nothing you can do to stop them unless you have a 25 people gang... and if you're in trouble with a narco, he's gonna have a bigger gun than yours, a bulletproof car and 25 guys ready to pop you.

My advice would be: keep out of bad neighborrhoods, don't mix with narcos, don't go to the guerrilla infested areas, and you won't need a gun...

shit, they would kill you with a stick just tu steal the gun...

Thanks! Thanks guys! That was just the kind of info that I wanted to know.

As for the "gringo" part, I'm seriously the most racially diverse looking person that you will ever know. I was in Japan and fit in perfectly with the mountain locals, I have been mistaken for eastern indian, afgani, italian, american indian, I could easily pass for a native of any south american country.

That was seriously just the stuff that I wanted to know though, about the narcos and the street people.

I figure: Keep my mouth shut, and don't carry anything valuable.

Can anyone from Bogota tell me what kind of neighboorhood Chapinero is?

DanielPaisa says on Oct 6, 2006, 17:29:

try reading the colombia safety guide. Most major cities are safe, as safe as any major city in the world. You can walk no trouble over most bogota, but there are places you certainly won't like to be in the middle of the night, just as many areas of NY or detroit or DC...

Just take basic precautions (don't be paranoid), leave your passport at the hotel, use only guarder ATM's on malls and don't flash expensive stuff... walking bogota with 50k pesos cash and a digital camera is as safe as walking any other city...

a safe bet... if the atm you're using is behind 2 glass doors, with an armed guard in front of the doors, good chance you won't get robbed. at least in front of the bank...
