Am I going to survive with 2.00.000 peso

Hi, I currently live in Chile but I want to move to Colombia to teach English in June. How long can I survive while looking for work with this amount of money?

Plus what is a good monthly wage? Is 1.400.000 ok?

Thanks for your help

PS i want to go to medellín

Hi Sirwhale, I asked a similar question a few days ago:

For the responses see: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/cost-of-living-in-medellin-versu...

You will see that a significant number of posters on PBH enjoy throwing their money away. Please see replies from Robert Jorge, Dtbrooklyn and La Huella, to name just a few, for some reassurance ;)

Papasotee is right.
With 2,000,000 per month you will live like a king.
Your best bet is Bogota, which is the 6th city in Latin America for doing business and where the average salary is 1,200,000 - 1,300,000.

Is this really true? I would have imagined that Bogota would be a lot more cosmopolitan being the capital and given its higher population etc.

You are probably right, But, as a % of population it has to be way higher in Medellin,

which is a nice change from the free spending ways we were taught in the US. -- Azunoman

Who is "taught" to spend more than they should? People all over the world (including Colombia) are blasted with hundreds of marketing messages per day. Some people have the will power to spend within their means and some don't. Likewise, some eat, smoke or drink too much and some don't.

I guess I'm a simpleton or maybe it's because I was raised in a family that lived within its means, but I don't blame consumer product companies or society for my choices - good, bad or otherwise.

Back on topic, Yes, you can live pretty well on 2 million pesos per month in Colombia. You can't live in the best neighborhood and take a different girl out every night and send a child to a private school, but if you're a single guy with modest wants, you'll do fine.

I wanted access to health care, housing and education, but, no, I get potholes, trash and silicone tits instead. -Desi.

Pay is higher in bogota and according to la huella it is cheaper to live in bogota than medellin. As far as cost of living, I´m willing to bet both cities are about the same.

Have a return ticket or save some money. Two million pesos per month,, yep,, you'll live it up big time.

This reminds me of my buddies who decided to go be surf bums in California. Remember thinking,, what the crap will these folks do,, lay on the beach all day? Screw until they drop,, hummmm,, maybe I should have gone.

Anyway,,

Some I lost track of,, but others,, life has not been kind, many are dead.

WoW,, damn,, looks like I have it double dicked,, really,, rich,, EC up,, really,, THREE MORE PERCENT.. oh,, man,, PBR (not PBH),, up,, Nordic Tankers UP,,, ha,, 30% in ONE MONTH,, damn,, makes me fond of those Nordic Folks,, guess what,, damn company still pays, 13.5 percent dividend,, geeeeeez and folks say the middle class got hurt ? Well,, just the poco luck,, some sell in May and go away,, Poco sells in may and goes to Colombia.

Yep,, this means the market will tank really quick,, and stay down until I get back to the U.S.

"many are dead"

Poco, what age(s) would they have been now if still living? One serious illness without insurance and fugetaboutit.

This kinda stuff I always think about. Yeah I might have been able to sell everything I owned at the height of the RE boom then if frugal and cautious with my money been able to live on it for 10-15 yrs. in CO but then still another 10 yrs., 5 min. until I can start drawing a military pension at age 60. So what the phuck would I do until then? Even in America now especially they age discriminate so trying to get back in the US workforce after being out for 10-15 yrs. not real easy. And overseas even worse. At height of RE boom dreamed of working in Spain and saw many job ads that basically said if over 35 need not apply, I don't like waging those kinds of bets.

Now we got the LFL so who needs to watch the NFL?

In their 60's,, some died in their 20's ,, last one I heard about,, was 55. I remember because someone told me the guy got shot messing around with someones wife !!! Can you believe it,, 55 or so and still stupid.

Insurance,, you are right and I've always made sure the FIRST thing I had was insurance. Most folks,, new pickup truck or insurance,, pickup truck wins. Bigger house or insurance,, bigger house,,

Because I've seen this for 50 years,, and 250 MILLION folks in the U.S. DO HAVE insurance,, then,, I feel zero sorrow for folks who can't manage their business.

This is one more reason why I will resist "sharing the wealth" with incompetent, lazy folks.

The availability of insurance for those with no money or medical problems or kids is NOT A PROBLEM.

There was a poster on this site,, GMan5 who also knew this,, but most think it not true,, well, it is.

Checkout this site,, PLUS,, have a real problem like kidney dialysis,, sign up,, no problem,, not even a gold card in Houston is required.

http://www.hchdonline.com/patient/onecard/goldcard.htm

So,, I'm glad I made it w/o being a needy person,, someone who couldn't make it on my own.

Now,, it looks like a bunch of folks will have LESS,, no matter how good things get. My prediction is that MOST companies are HAPPY to have an excuse to get rid of their LAZY deadwood. Even in good times,, 5% holding jobs with top companies,, are worthless. I've said and get a smile and a nod,, that some companies should PAY some of their employess to STAY HOME,, the company would be money ahead.

These folks will NEVER get a first class job,, nope,, there will be a replacement but it will more than likely be lower class contract job and if they really aren't worth a shit,, then it will pay less and have less benefits.

Yes, depending on what you do,, returning to the U.S. and finding a good job when you are older is not easy. That of course depends on your skills,, but the majority of employers would rather hire younger, healthy, hard working, wage slaves.

There was a "sacker" in a grocery store who was a cost control guy in Trinidad. Probably 60 and,, well,, a sacker in Kroger.

You can bet I'd would have sold out in California when the average price home was $500,000. A friends son sold a home he paid $300,000 for in the late 80's and,, this is sad,, but,, it's what happens when you're married,, although he was in his 50's,, anyway wanted a BIGGER home, sold his for about One Million and bought one for $1,300,000. Last year his father told me the story,, his NEW home was less than $800,000 and going down,, San Fransisco area.

For sure,, I'd have invested in fixed income,, rented and started looking at the Viet Nam area. That is where a lot of military guys are going,, luck was,, no huge bucks from home sale,, but,, I found Colombia.

Yes,,Now I can say for sure,, Asian Women come in second place. Although some guys have asked if I'd been "walked off",, what's that about? Anyway,, Colombian women have fine looking asses and Viet Nam,, kind of flat,, if you ask me,, but,, like Sardines or Tuna,, personal taste.

Damn: Market tanking,, Treasury Note sale,, not good,, needed to offer HIGHER interest rate to sell. Great,, printing money and to get rid of it,, the U.S. needs to PAY A HIGH PRICE.

Next thing you know,, dollar will be like Zimbabwe,, wall paper. Oh,, sorry,, cheaper than wallpaper.

I mentioned inflation to my roommate and he said, it would never be a BIG problem,, well, really,, this is what he said,, Movie tickets might go up,, typical University thinking,, iPods would get expensive,, gave him a 10 Trillion Note and said,, thought this didn't happen except in Germany after WW1?

Poco...you see eighty year bag "boys" is Sarasota Fla all the time. They can't put more than a few cans in the bags or they cannot lift them. Then they hobble with their canes out to their convertible mustangs and burn rubber leaving the parking lot. All in all it is surreal.

They move down to fullfill a dream and cannot afford life.

Hmmm, sounds familar?

I appreciate Papasotee referencing me higher up in this thread. But for the record, in the other similar topic thread, I was just sharing my own expeience in a much smaller city than Bogota and even Medellin. Things where I was at were/are definitely more economical. I also aknowledged that I didn't have health insurance which was, looking back, foolish. But I also stand by what I said about living off of 1.5 million pesos. If I could go back now, I would rent a 250.000 cop house instead of a 450.000 apartment. Internet was by far my most expensive utility. And with all of the Internet cafes, I could have done without it also. And as I said in the other thread, what I needed to be happy didn't cost a hell of a lot of money.

OK,, I can promise everyone,, I believe that I live CHEAPER than,, what,, oh,, Rubito,, yes,, less money,, although I do spend more on electricity,, I'm not a light lover but,, 60 watt is OK.

Really,, Washer, Hot water shower, lots of lights,, big refrig.. double door,, ice and water in door,, ice maker,, damn,, how can a person live w/o an ice maker and cold water on the outside of the refrig??? Almost forgot,, 40" 1080 Sony flat screen,, uses a huge amount of electricity but worth it.

Microwave,, I use it everyday to reheat coffee,, I don't mind cold coffee but if I get caught drinking some,, well,, Blender,, those benders suck up the juice,,, THE BIG ITEM,, electric Rice Cooker,, damn,, no telling how poor people make rice,, I need to think about it, maybe they boil water in a pot?.

So,, my TOTAL, everything,, watching the paint peal,, sitting on my ass in the park,, playing with my bird,, watching the chickens grown,, picking avocados off the avocado tree. Damn,, I have NICE big, juicy, avocados, lots of them,, oh,, food for 4 people,, groceries,, including soap,, toilet paper,, toothpaste,, dishwashing stuff,, running the ceiling fans,, automatic porch light,, POWER TOOLS,, table saw,, sazall, sander,, HUGH,, concrete drill,, plus,, spending money,, yes, enough money to buy a chuzo once a month,, damn chuzo's are EXPENSIVE,, really,, two,, w/soda,, 8,000 pesos,, gezzz,, 5 years ago,, maybe 5,000 pesos for two,,, rent,, included,, the girl I'm with owns her house,, I was charging her 50,000 pesos and she could have bragging rights that she lived with an American,, hey,, being an American is a big deal. 10 chickens,, a parrot,, two other small birds,, chicken house,, indoor plumbing,, did I say hot water? Anyway,, I let her off the hook,, but I don't do dishes.

So,, all this is,, WAIT,, almost forgot,,HEALTH insurance for the family,, LESS THAN 500,000 pesos per month,, and I've really got it dicked,, serious,, made in the shade,,, the living is good,, did I say a whirlpool clothes washer,, etched glass kitchen table,, custom kitchen,, granite counters,, did I mention I live better than the President,, yes,, for very little money.

Most posters on here can't come close,, but it is possible,, just ask L.H.

PS: Includes TAXES,, Ha,, I hate taxes,, honest,, taxes suck,, but,, not much,, as you can imagine,, estrato 2 home.
