Alone with no book in Ipiales

I arrived in Ipiales yesterday and have lost my guide so have absolutely no idea where to go or what to next. Is Pasto a good place or how about Cali..I know there are some places int eh north that I'd like to visit but obviously being iont he south will start down here. I wouldn't mind going (just quickly) somewhere reasonably touristy to pick up another guide book or something. Any suggestions?

If you have Internet access you can use a new feature on GOOGLE to read many books. Go to GOOGLE and on the opening screen click [more] then navigate to [texts] and type whatever you are wanting to read about, in this case Pasto you can then scroll through the resulting books until you find what you are looking for. Here is a direct link to one such entry.

Where to go? What´s your general plan?what areas do you plan to visit in Colombia? Pasto is a small city, I´d suggest you take a bus to Cali, a much larger city and more interesting (about 9 hours by bus from Ipiales) and from there you can visit the coffee region too.

since you're in the area go see the famous Santuario de Las Lajas, in the vicinity of Ipiales. Breathtakingly beautiful! After that take a bus down the hill to Pasto (hoping the nearby volcano Las Galeras is not acting up) and then go on to Popayan and Cali. You can travel by bus, but preferably daytime, because there's active guerrilla in the area. The scenery is very nice.
From Cali on you have several choices: El Eje Cafetero (coffee-growing region with several small cities/big towns like Pereira, Armenia and Manizales and then on to Medellín, Bogotá and the Caribbean coast. Another alternative would be visiting the Pacific beaches of Playa Solano, El Valle, la Ensenada de la Utria and go on to Chocó and see some real jungle with lovely, dark-sand beaches and then head to Cartagena and Barranquilla.

Cheers,
Desi

Popayan for sure, better than Pasto. Cali is a nice city, but not much tourism sites to really see. Good for partying.
