Airport Baggage Guys

When one arrives at El Dorado Airport there are these "baggage guys".

Since we were carrying too much luggage (2 suitcases each) plus carry on stuff. We were glad to have the help moving the stuff through customs.

My question: What is the normal tip per bag these gentlemen?

Thanks,

Woody

They help you move it through customs? When I arrived in Medellin I had to move all my own stuff...2 suitcases, a laptop, backpack, and a large tv all by myself. After I got through customs and security they were waiting to help but by that point I already did all the hard work and it was just a short walk to the taxi so I declined their service.

I think they have carts I can use at the baggage claim but at that point I didn't speak any spanish nor did I have any pesos.

My luggage all have wheels so I do it myself and hand myself the "TIP" LOL

Those guys that help with the baggage are also a great resource to use if you need to make a phone call outside of the airport. As far as I know, people are not allowed to sell minutes outside of the airport. So, if you ask a baggage guy, they will discreetly get you a person that has a cell phone for hire. Be prepared to pay 500 to 1000 pesos per minute for the service. (I assume the baggage guy gets tipped out by the minute seller later)

I guess I over-paid... We paid the guy 20,000 pesos, but we did have like 6 heavy pieces of luggage and he did have it set-up with the customs guy, so he only took a peek on top of one bag and let all the others go.... He also arranged the 2 cabs to take us....

It all depends on you....

1,000 to 2,000 per bag, depending on service. Some of these guys can actually just get you right through customs in about 15 seconds through a closed line.

Two cabs? I always wondered how people managed large amounts of luggage vs. tiny taxis. I guess the answer is put some luggage in each taxi and at least one person in each taxi.

Once at the cartagena airport, a guy "helped" me with my bags before my return flight to miami. I had two bags linked together which rolled on their own wheels pretty easily. He wheeled them from the curb to the first window, then to the line for check-in. I asked my buddy, what should I tip this guy? He said maybe 2000 pesos...I gave the guy the 2,000 pesos, he made a face like I put a pile of shit in his hand. Guess he expected more for his 3 minutes of "work". Now, I firmly refuse all their "help" to avoid the drama....

msaucey says on Nov 20, 2007, 08:44:

That's pretty much what happened Tinto.... We had 2 tiny cabs and 6 large pieces of luggage plus 2 people.... They of course were kind enough to ask if we just wanted one cab to follow us with all the luggage... But, of course, no matter what, I don't trust strangers that much!.... 3 pieces of luggage in each taxi with one of us in each cab.... I did have to say, don't lose the cab, because I have a vague idea of the address...

Cartegena is the worst-though they have improved with some new rules in the past six months.
I refuse any type of help at the airport there.

Tinto...

That is exactly what we did on our August trip. We had nine suitcases and all our carry on stuff. We also were limited to 20 kilos total luggage on our flight from Bogota to Medellin.

The reason for that was that we had a "broken" itenerary. If we had immediately continued on to Medellin; then Avianca would have honored the US luggage limits.

We ended up paying a courier service 60,000 pesos to deliver eight pieces of luggage to our motel.

You were ripped off. If you fly international into Colombia the "Colombian" weight limits do NOT apply.
