Airline fares are liberalized

(Taken from El Colombiano)

The Civil Aeronautics Board decided to liberalize the minimum fare standard Colombian airlines have had to stick to historically, thereby allowing companies to give travelers services to both national and international destinations at lower prices. The Board determined that it is alright for companies to fix their own fares as long as they do not surpass a certain limit, established by the Board. Nonetheless, the Board will keep an eye on the fares customers are charged. Companies will now have to fight for customers, who will benefit from the fare war.

I hope this means I can start paying less than $500.000 for the half hour flight from Bogota to Neiva.

Aires, ADA and some others compete with Avianca in Colombia. On the MIA route you can take American or Copa and probably others. I avoid Avianca whenever practicable.

Nice to hear Avianca will finally get some real competition. Lets see how long they(avianca) stay afloat when some real Airlines enter the Competition! Long Overdue and Happy to hear it!

$500.000 COP. Which translates into about $260 US. The sad thing is that this is the Colombian price. If I was to buy that same ticket from the US, I would be charged closer to $400 US. The sad thing is that the three airlines(Avianca, Aires and Satena) that fly to Neiva all keep their prices almost identical. Can you say price fixing?

That is round trip BTW, but it still a complete ripoff. If I wasn't usually pressed for time, I would just take a flota like I did when I was a kid.
