So I ask the guy at the liquor store for some Aguardiente. My thoughts were maybe he could get some in for me....no shit he has it on the shelf already. Says he keeps it around for a girl that comes in once in a while (maybe a hot colombiana, thats another story).
So the bottle is rather large round in shape and has what seems to be the brand name 'cristal' on it. With a black label and cap. The only kind I have ever seen is antiqueno, is this brand any good before I drop $17 on it.

dwmte7 says on Feb 12, 2009, 14:52: aguardiente is aguardiente......and crystal like all the others ain't worth 17 dollars.....tells me you're not in colombia...but since you're not in colombia, buy it, lick your wounds and tell the liquorista to tell the gal 'you're sorry'....and go home and drink it. ex pat gives good advise. patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

mosvar says on Feb 12, 2009, 14:55: Ya it is a pretty big friggin bottle It's not a 1/5 or anything it is very large. No not in Colombia until I find some way to sustain myself there, like rob a bank.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Feb 12, 2009, 14:57: Cristal is a pretty common brand in Colombia. It is about the only aguardiente that is widely available in the US outside of Florida. You can occasionally find Azul which is much better. Still, Cristal is pretty decent if you like aguardiente. mosvar says on Feb 12, 2009, 15:05: Thank`s gringo,, we can find the antiqueno in Jackson Heights but this is the first I have saw anything including this....not that I have been looking though outside Jackson heights.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Feb 12, 2009, 15:18: It makes sense that they would have Antioqueño in Jackson Heights. Next time you're there, see if you can find Aguardiente Azul. It is really nice and smooth. In the US, I've only found it in Miami. Mononoke28 says on Feb 12, 2009, 15:57: Believe it or not CG, I can get Cristal here in Denver. There's a huge liquor store called Lukas Liquors and they sell it, it's right next to the Greek stuff. Cristal is not bad but I like Antioqueño better, it's sweeter I think. Diana 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

omargue says on Feb 12, 2009, 16:07: Crystal is usually the aguardiente that you'll find in the US, its from Bogota. a few years back when i lived in miami, you could find alot of different brands, but you are in NY so you could probably find antioqueño, go to queens, pequeño Colombia and youll find it there. Blanco my preference but you have to take what you can get.....always get sin azucar, much better/smoother and it doesnt give hangover...

Robert Jorge says on Feb 12, 2009, 21:47: Aguardiente Antioqueño is available in all the big cities in Florida. I can confirm Orlando, greater Miami, and Tampa. The bottle of Cristal you are talking about is probably a 1.75 litre jug. $17 is actually a damn good price in the US. Even in Colombia that's not ridiculous. Either way the stuff tastes like something inside you dies everytime you drink it. I like the one in the juice box though :). dwmte7 says on Feb 14, 2009, 10:57: when you go into the licoreas out side of the cities, you have your choice, aguardiente antioqueno or aguardiente antioqueno. same with ron. ron medellin or ron medellin. they keep it simple. a little more complicated with beer. aguila and colombia. patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

dwmte7 says on Feb 15, 2009, 03:32: the thing about guaro, you gotta drink one hell-of-a lot to get drunk. i think maybe that's why folks like it...aside from price. people just get mellow and loose and the party goes on. i've not seen too many roudies over the years. not like folks that get zonked on whiskey. they get mean. haven't noticed that with guaro. patriarch 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
