Desde hace ya algunos años junto con un grupo de amigos repartimos aguapanelita y algún alimento a los habitantes de la calle en la ciudad de Bogota.
Muchas personas en repetidas ocasiones han manifestado su interés de vincularse a esta actividad y quienes participamos semanalmente de esta causa soñamos con que esta se replique por todos los rincones de Colombia y hasta mucho mas lejos de lo que podamos imaginar.
Entonces fue cuando se me ocurrió q que chévere seria generar un evento donde cada uno de nosotros de manera silenciosa y anónima pudiera impactar una población menos favorecida y donde el gran ganador de esta experiencia fuera uno mismo. Que por un momento todos aquellos que quieren participar de nuestra actividad semanal de aguapanelita o que simplemente sienten una necesidad de ayudar, lograran sentir lo que cada lunes, jueves y sábado experimentamos nosotros al compartir un pan y un vaso de aguapanela con un hermano necesitado. Que rico seria que cada uno de nosotros quedáramos enamorados de esta Jornada de los 10 panes para seguirla realizando cada ves que nos acordáramos lo afortunados que somos y lo mucho que tenemos para compartir con personas que no tienen un techo y un alimento asegurado cada dÃa.

Drinking aguapanella is like giving children Nestle infant formula that mothers water down, so it lasts a long time. When you dilute the concentration, there is no nutritional content and children are malnurished. The exception with aguapanella is that you are provided with carbohydrates as calories.
It is a shame that the people they feed on the streets do not eat what the people serve in their own homes! To give someone sugar water is basically reckless, when the people need nutritious drinks! They are NOT having GOOD things to drink, just a bunch of calories!
Who would think a diet of bread & water is fine for them? Ok, add a few tablespoons of sugar and you have the garbage given to the homeless people! It is demeaning to someone on the street to see that the individuals really don't care!
They could easily go and provide the people with food sold by vendors on the street! Imagine, protein from beef or chicken. They could even get vitamins from the potatoes. WOW! Would the people be happy with a stomach filled full of good food? Definitely YES!

Yo pienso que mas importante que el contenido nutricional de la comida que se les da a estas personas (que creo que es mucho mejor que quedarse en la casa solo criticando), es lo que significa para ellos (siempre rechazados por la sociedad), que personas de otros niveles sociales se acerquen para decirles: "estoy preocupado por tu dolor, quiero acompañarte un momento, quiero compartir contigo algo de mi, me gusta conversar contigo y saber algo de tu vida".
Hay cosas que alimentan mucho mas que la comida. Acciones como esta alimentan el espiritu de muchos que lo están necesitando.
Te aseguro que estas personas de la calle disfrutan mucho mas del gesto de generosidad en si mismo y del tiempo y la alegria que les regalas, que del tipo de comida que les estás dando.
Aunque el programa está bajo el titulo de "aguapanela", las personas que participan en él pueden dar todo lo que quieran dar. LO IMPORTANTE ES LA VOLUNTAD DE HACERLO Y COMPARTIR. Además me parece hasta una buena decisión que el programa se base en la aguapanela: Asà nadie tendrá la disculpa de decir: "no lo hago porque no tengo dinero para regalar comida".

Also, it is something that can be prepared in many different styles depending on the culture. There are great Colombian rice and bean recipes. In the US, you have New Orleans red beans and rice and in many places there is some sort of native legume and rice dish.
We always heard from the people we served that they really appreciated meals that "stuck to their ribs" and beans and rice was always well received. It is also great when it is cold outside.

Have you ever SEEN people feeding homeless people? I have! The best people give nutritious meals and the worst were rich people coming from wealthy places far from the city giving worthless things they called food that they themselves would not eat!

I assure you that these people on the street enjoy much more of a gesture of generosity in itself and the time and joy gived for you, more that type of food they're receiving.
Although the program is under the title "aguapanela", people involved in it can give everything you want to give. What is important is the will to make and share. Also I think a good decision until the program is based on aguapanela: So nobody will have the excuse of saying "I do not because I do not have money to give away food."

I spoke with my girl friend in Cali and she saw the TV show about that organization. She explained that they are giving hot aguapanela, since Bogota is COLD late at night. I said that they should be giving Quaker Avena, since it has more nutrition and they can add powdered milk in it for the children.

She has alot of concern that me as a foreigner might be attacked among the urban street people. If she thinks one thing and I think another, then I need to think of what both of us agree upon. She knows to travel by bus is safe for her, but thinks I would be at risk even if I thought differently! Well, so we do not travel by bus!

I agree, Paleo and Lisa too. As a gesture, very nice, but a glass of milk or a fruit shake would be better. Even a large cup of hot chocolate made with milk, with cheese in it and a pandebono would be better (a little protein too, not just empty calories).

He estado con la idea de empezar a hacer en Medellin algo similar a lo que hace "aguapanelita" en Bogotá. Ver: www.aguapanelita.org
Se trata de sacar algunas horas de la semana (puede ser en la noche o en el dia), para reunirse con habitantes de la calle o familias muy pobres de Medellin y llevarles algo de comer. (El tipo de comida que se les daria se definiria después. Eso es lo de menos, pero les prometo que será nutritiva).
Pero mas importante que favorecerlos a ellos con comida, es el hecho de salir por algunas horas de nuestra burbuja de bienestar y mirar la vida y el mundo desde su perspectiva real: Hay mucho dolor allá afuera buscando ser aliviado.
Compartir con estas personas algo de nosotros, nos enriquece a nosotros tanto como a ellos, porque experiencias como estas, son iguales a una caja de sorprezas llena de secretos que solo son revelados a los que son capaces de dar de si mismos a los demás.
No pido que se comprometan a nada. Solo que si a alguno de ustedes le da el arranque de experimentar esta acción, me llame o me escriba y me diga: "listo hagamoslo este sábado o este jueves (o cuando pueda)". Nos reunimos, compramos los ingredientes y cocinamos (yo me encargo de eso), definimos a dónde vamos a ir y simplemante vamos!.
Lo importante es intentarlo. Yo quiero hacerlo, pero a mi sola me queda muy dificil. Si encuentro al menos 2 personas que quieran hacerlo conmigo, estaré muy feliz.
Animense que Medellin es mucho mas que el Parque Lleras y Mangos! :)
Me parecerÃa espectacular que algún turista se le midiera a sacar de su plan de vacaciones unas horas para hacer esto. Estoy absolutamente segura que sus vacaciones se enriquecerÃan muchisimo.
Y si alguno tiene miedo de lo que estas personas puedan hacerles, pues se pintan la piel con betún y se ponen una peluca jejeje. (vean, les aseguro que un peligro mucho mayor habita en algunos de los sitios que muchos de ustedes frecuentan. Lo que pasa es que no lo pueden ver tan facilmente. Es mas peligroso y dañino que las balas!).
A ver pues quien se le va a apuntar a esta idea, antes de que pieda el impulso!! :)

Es que al comienzo le llevamos a poquitas pesonas y vamos viendo como pinta el asunto. Incluso podemos dar chocolate con pandebono como dice Desi. Menos engorroso que los frijoles con carne y nutritivo también.
