Try it and see what happens The way I understand it - if you have filed for AOS and then apply for SSN - they may or may not issue you a card based on when the I94 expires - there are also problems with getting the SSN in her married name. Try it out at your local office (show them your NOA for the I485) and see what they say or do. For my fiance we got the SSN in her unmarried name first; then we got married and tried to get the name changed and they wouldn't do it - we were given a letter stating that they will check her name with homeland and if it matches they will issue a new card (in the married name) in approx. 4 weeks. There have been lots of discussion of the rules and policies on Visa Journey. Try it out and maybe you can post your situation and someone can tell you what might or might not happen. Good Luck

Congratulations and my current situtation First Congratulations - The K-1 Process is long and the marriage finally seals the deal. We sent my wifes AOS papework in last month and it is my understanding from my lawyer that we have to wait to get her work authorization before applying for her SSN. Here is what SS says:

How do I get a number and card?
To apply for a Social Security number and card:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and
Show us original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency proving:
U.S. citizenship or immigration status [including Department of Homeland Security (DHS) permission to work in the United States];
Age; and
Identity.
Then, take or mail your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office.

Citizenship or immigration status: We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current U.S. immigration documents. Acceptable documents include your:

Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport);
I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or
Work permit card from the Department of Homeland Security (I-766 or I-688B).

THANKS thanks , at least your attorney could answer the question mine had to check with his paralegal to be sure ...but yes i was told the same thing it is better to wait and get the work permit but we were told that once we get the proof that immigration recceived the aos papers she can at least apply for her drivers license ....thanks again .

have filed for AOS ??After k1 and marriage? what is aos??? waiting for social card in the mail it takes 2 weeks they say going on 4 weeks .... go to go to the office soon...whats the next step for my wife to go to work and get on with her life here.........thanks for the help

If you marry on a K-1 she has to adjust her status to that of a permanent resident. More paperwork and more dinero for the government.
