advice from people that live here

is normally a little better than people that have lived here for a short while and gone home, let alone people that have just passed through. Anyone can google stuff but believe me seeing is believing.

Does this thread have a purpose?

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

I am not sure that is what this thread is about......
I think its about people who live in Colombia are the ones to give advice.
The ones that have lived here longer are the best ones to administer this. Most likely because they have been here longer and have more experience and have more to say.
The people that have LIVED here are ok to give some advice but not as good as the ones that live here all the time.
Then their are the people who just pass thru and do not stay. These people are not as versed as the people who have lived here for a long time and close but not as good as the people that once LIVED here.
And finally, you have the people that get all their supposed information from the internet. These people are not as good as any of the other three but still yet better than one that just gives advice and has never been NOR looks stuff up and pretends to have been.

IS THIS RIGHT?

Some people who have lived here for a long time develop their own agendas and their advice sucks.

i alway wonder what folks mean when they say "a long time"

we used to have an old gringo here in the family (pbh) don't remember his name, he'd been in colombia since something like 67......now that's a long time.

change now happens at warp speed. when i first dove into this pond, it was a little over twenty years ago...nothing changed for about 6-8 years. same shit, different day. but then--in the metro areas--(not so where the grass grows tall) things began to be safer, less meyhem and murder, terrorism and sequestro. now, in the major cities and metro areas. it's like a different world. mind you, the shit is still there, it's just below the surface, so don't press your luck too much.

but with the legalization of laundering ill gotten gain, you see the urbanization, condo towers, mall development and infrastructure projects changing everything. the last 3-5 years just the appearance has changed in a quantum manner.for years you could drive up to and through llano grande from medallo and not one thing changed. same restaurants/estaderos same folks making funky furniture, basically nothing changed. in llano itself, it was 15miles of same. now, in the last four years, like another world. at least along the main road. gualanday was unchanged for twenty years. then 4-5 years ago, gonzalo built another building and added some things in back and it's all changed.

and poblado! just imagine poblado with dirt streets and no clubs, no lleras, no zip.....that was poblado...oh, it had the after hour bars in the parkeaderos on diez and la casa de los cinco puertos, el portal and pablo....that was poblado. now look at it. for me, give me pablo. he was better entertainment with his chateau/carcel on the hill, big spending, shootouts and bombings...never a dull moment. not that i prefer meyhem and killing over sanity and safety....nah. i just like more adventure. that's what made me fall in love with medallo in the late 80's. crazy and dangerous as hell, but romantic beyond belief. now, i gotta go up in the mtns with my buddie on their fincas to live colombia. that ain't bad, but you used to ride horses around lleras and las palmas. way cool. there'ld be 3 or four horses tied at cinco puertos and more up around the grass in lleras. we could ride up to the intercontinental....man, it was great. no more of that. pity.

you young fellows have mangos and i really don't know what else. enjoy. for four hundred dollars, you used to rent a heli for the best part of a day and go up to rio negro, la trucha, llano, el retiro or where ever. killer! there were always horses in parke envigado, always...day and night. they even rode them up to pueblito paisa. and in the pueblo up the hill, horses everywhere. pity. now ya gotta go way out to find that.

I agree with jeff. Some of you guys that have spent very little time in medellin compared to me actually know the tourist and night life much better than I do.

In fact even though I live here I still learn things from other members who may or may not live here.

you guys are right about the tourist and the tourist 'mind'. i was in so many places on this earth and just did my work and never saw the 'sights'. i was/am a workaholic and that's all i did. with all the places i worked, it's kinda sad. just a lot of notes and photos. ha.

i know some great places/haunts in and around medallo, but they're off the beaten track and haven't changed with the times...they look like they did fifty years ago. my kinda places for the most part. tourist would die going in them. places lie 'aqelare' down town, 'cinco puertos' in poblado or 'por si lo vin' in sabaneta. funkies, but great. expedia.com ain't gonna get you in cheaper.
