ADIOS PBH

The most posts that I have read in this forum are stinky.
It looks like all the neo-nazis of Colombia and USA have their meeting point here.
So I shall not frequent it one second more.

Bye bye to you and bad luck.

(do not tire yourselves, I shall not read your answers).

I agree. We once had such great & civil debates filled with intelligent responses... I am sure that these days so many comments reflect such a low calibre of humanity & civility that alot of potentially valuable members must be totally turned off.

I feel like we are have become one of "those" crass & uncouth forums - reduced to grossly simplified generalised POVs.. like a roomful half-full of drunk people trying to converse.

Maybe in the future, the novelty "they can't see me, I can type anything *I* want " will wear off as people get used to the internet.

What the hell is this? A PBH Cold war?

Look, prior to me coming to PBH, I posted on martial arts websites. In one particular website, there was an honor system. In fact everyone gave their real names for the most part. At times there was some flaming going on but people talked things out - albeit in passionate and crass ways, but things got settled. Why should anyone feel they should hide behind the internet? Doesn't one's printed word count for anything? Even though members here dont' use their real names for the most part, it's about integrity.

Then I read on here: " Who takes the internet seriously?" bullshit. Well . . . I do. I get a lot of information from this source and meet people with common interests. It's a bit different here.

Interesting post Webmanco.

Tell me, does threatening physical harm to anyone on the internet mean anything? I may lose my temper sometimes, but I never threaten physical harm. However, I actually met up with people from around the world, put on the hand and foot gloves, and went at it with them in sparring. It turns out that once you meet a person, it's all different. The face behind the written word changes things. I've become friends with most people I had harsh words with on the internet. Once you meet up and you know no one will punk out, it changes things.

I don't know, my shit is weird all together but imagine someone taking shots at Morphus? Jajaja? And I've read them! That's too funny! Jajajaja!

"Threatenng physical harm to anyone both in the internet and in person face to face means the one threatening has a loose nut that needs to be tigthen up."

You're right again here.

Let me explain: I've fought for more than a 20 years in training and in tournaments (most in grueling training). After awhile, unless someone has a weapon, and if I'm called out to a fight, I take it as a joke. Guess what - my buddies call me out to fights all the time. Since I'm a little older than they are plus being a "old school" martials art guy, there's always some trash talk about wanting to kick my ass. I love it! It keeps me on top of my game plus I get to prove I can still open up a few cans on whoop-ass on these guys.

Sure I can get hurt but I've gotten hurt so many times that fighting for me is as natural as swimming or playing soccer. It's just sport as far as I'm concerned. So, one learns how to take a few punches and kicks to the face, locks and takedowns. I've been a little kid for more that half my life because I like to rough house. So, someone challenging me is near ridiculous because, unlike sparring where a fight is governed by rules, there are no rules in the personal self-defense and I know exactly how and where to break them.

Am I a nut? Yeah. I am, and so is anyone else involved in contact sports. Imagine threatening defense linemen from a NFL football team? Get my point? I mean it's ridiclous - those dudes are monsters. When they're happy, they bang each other's helmets.

What's even more ridiculous? Threatening people physical harm here on PBH or anywhere else in the internet with no intention of doing anything - just talk shit.

Greg, you are right some posters are terrible jokers y others have values, but do you know know or see how the jokers out weigh the valued comments? That a valued comment gets shot down for who they are, their past or because they do not bow to the rah rah crowd? The internet y this forum is not that simple y easy

Hola!

Maybe I skim over topics that have become trivialized? What is the point of getting bogged down? Click on Active and look for the new posts!

I tend to bring up ideas that I have done or know about, so that means I limit myself to different topics. Having many posters just keeps the traffic flowing and topics can get past that isolated comment. The jokers can not do every post. They do other things besides be online!

I've been a member for about since December of '06, but I've read this site for much longer than that. My take on this, some of the newer members may not realize this, this site is not the same that it was a couple years ago. Even 1 year ago for that matter. Quality of posts, information about Colombia, the dialog between members, even the "entertainment" value, have all deteriorated. I am not about to write a "Good-bye" post as so many posters have done, but someday I will probably join the other members with more dignity and quietly disappear.

Azul, the quality of the posts is something that depends entirely on ourselves. We can choose to either passively watch as the trolls feast on the comments that people who find them entertaining are feeding them with or ignore the bad and make an effort to post something worthwhile ourselves.

Azul let´s supposed we got in PBH as in Colombia, a democracy, where everyone who abides to the rules can participate. Now you can critizice the quality of the content in the site, although by doing so you are putting down a few or many contribuitors, and put yourself as a great contribuitor which could be true. It is good to express your opinions but at the same time I do believe you are been somehow off the mark, a little elitist maybe.

I for once had not seen PBH deterioriating in the way you described, maybe because I try to take the good out the not so good.

PBH has its quite moments, rush hours and has many lurkes who do not participate even if they might have something to contribute not out DIGNITY but out wrong information.

Last but not least who are we to judge wheter we got more dignity than our next neigboor, y/o poster??

These are not my words (below)

Desi, it is not exactly the trolls that have damaged or caused this site to get worse, it is actually some of the hardcore newer members. The trolls are just a distraction, but the continued badgering by the "locals" rat pack that creates or continues the problems to the posts that are 1/2 way meaningful. Sometimes/alot of times is hard to skim through the fat to get to the real meat of the info that I like to learn from y read about amazing life, culture or meaningful info.

If we only concentrated at posting on topic, on Colombia (travel. everyday life, culture. food. news and politics, sports etc. ) and avoided all that gossipy posting on EACH OTHERS the site would clean up a lot. It may lose some of the entertainment value, though, but it's really a relatively small group who use this forum for their own, personal sandbox to keep the boredom away.

But yes, jake, this is also something I have been saying before. It's the internal strife, the bickering, the gossiping, the ill will towards each others amongst the expat crowd that has ruined many expat boards. Now this is not entirely an expat board, but a travelers' forum in the first place and a community of travelers and expats in the second. It's not the travelers who come here to fight each other.

Gringo Spy says on Jul 21, 2008, 10:02:

Below is what I interpreted as the mission statement for PBH:

"Poorbuthappy wants to do 2 things:

1. Make travel more fun.

We believe traveling is about seeing things differently. And meeting people. That's why we built this website.

2. Make traveling more real.

Travel isn't about following a guidebook, any guidebook. It's not about going down the beaten path. And it's definitely not about sitting in a hostel with 40 other foreigners watching reruns of Friends episodes.
We think that, if there is information, tips and stuff available that goes way beyond the usual travelguide stuff, that that will help make travel real again, about discovery."

Now you tell me how 90% of the post and subsequent comments on this site "Make travel more fun" or "Make travel more real"?

The Mods are responsible for this site degrading to the point is has. I'm quite sure it was not, and is not, Peter's vision to see this site become a sandbox for a handful of unruly, disrespectful hooligans. I for one have become quickly disenchanted with this site and have since significantly reduced my participation. It is truly sad how and why Peter has allowed it to come to this point. All one needs to do is enforce the existing rules and this site would be much improved. For example:

1. No sexist, racist or obscene language.
2. No personal attacks.
3. Stay on topic.

Even if only rule #3 was adhered to (and enforced) it would make a world of difference don't you think?

I could go on and on but why? It's not my site it's Peter's and if he wants to allow his wonderful creation to go down the shit hole then so be it.

because the site have improve in my opinion there was a time which it was rubbish, but now Peter have done a lot of good work here, keeping trolls out the site it is a difficult task, they will keep coming back the only way to keep them away will be not to open for sing up again but that would not help in the long run.

The site will keep improving and the flag system is much better because we mods can't go and read every thread,

now what we need is that many of you control your tempers
