Actual telephone knowledge

I am about to move to Colombia and conduct my business from there. I have read some posts on Skype and Vonage, and have been to the Skype site but getting information from the source is kinda like beleiving what your goverment tells you.

Are there any gringos living in Colombia with cheap reliable phone service to and from the states including fax service. Opinions welcome, but experience with actual phone service would be much prefered.

We have DSL in the house in Colombia.

Thanks in advance.

Nicadj, The last time I went to Colombia I took my vonage phone and it worked fine. My friends and family in the States said it sounded crystal clear when we talked. Currently my extended family in Colombia uses a vonage to call me. As for skype, I had problems with it. Plus the cost of Vonage is so cheap. I hope that helps.

Sype and Yahoo Messenger work fine for me with a 150K connection. Yahoo is a little cheaper to the U.S.

I use Skype which is about two cents a minute to the U.S. They had problems at first, but it is crystal clear at the moment. I call any phone number including cell phones in the U.S. for the same price. You can also send text messages to cell phones around the world.

Thank you for contacting Skype Support.

Unfortunately, we do not have any SkypeIn numbers for Colombia yet.

We are working very hard at adding more and more locations and numbers for SkypeIn. As soon as we get more numbers in more locations we will add them to our store. Please be patient as it can take time for us to get the necessary approvals for numbers in certain locations.

Vonage, no doubt in my mind. You can take the modem with you. Its only one fee, calls to the US will be free and they also have a fax service. The only problem is Colombia has a lot of problems with the internet being down or no electricity.

Why do you want a Colombian SkypeIn number?

Wouldn't you want to tie your Skype account to a US number so people can call you local from there?

My experience using work-related Skype from Colombia has been fine. Pay attention to the upload speed of your connection, I would only use Skype with minimum 128k up. At these speeds you must shut down anything else that uses the connection while on a call (p2p for example).

que nota!

I use Lingo. It is about 20$ a month and you can call anywhere in the states at any time for the 20 bucks. I think it is fantastic. You can choose your area code and if you haven't disconnected your phone yet, you can even transfer your existing number. If you want, e-mail me and use me as a reference.....you get cheaper rates if you refer people.
