Accountancy

I spent 3 months in glorious Medellin two summers ago and am hoping to move back in a few years time. But right now I was wondering what people thought of the business/finance environment in Colombia? I'm current;y studying to be a Chartered Accountant and so hoping to take this our to Colombia. Does anyone know much about jobs in this area? Any help is appreciated!

My soon to be husband got graduated as accountant pretty recently (in Colombia) and I will be studying accountancy in Colombia soon.

Most jobs are in Bogota (PwC, KPMG, etc etc). For him, the university arranges job interviews and such.
Outside of Bogota there are few jobs for little pay.

For example, he got many great offers in Bogota with a junior starting wage of 1.2 million pesos ranging up to 2..

In Cali, hardly any company available (through his university!!!) and the few that are, want just 6 month workers for a pay as little as 500,000 pesos month maximum...

Plus keep in mind if you are not Colombian (not baring a Colombian PASSPORT), you need a letter saying that there are no Colombians available to do the work...
Colombians get overall preference.

But give it a try at the big companies. Who knows.

Accounting Firms Want English Speakers or US GAAP knowledge. But are not willing to pay for it, not willing to give good terms, and as conservative and closed as all Colombian companies. The big boys are all Colombian run here - you will not find a familiar, friendly Gringo face. They think like Colombians and that will set you back because there is an army of qualified people here (you are probably better, but Colombian managers don't care).

If this sounds personal, it is. I applied to all of them, spoke personally to most, got really close with Grant Thornton, and was basically cheated. Doped into doing work and not getting paid. Your best chance is to find a small firm, or a partner to create a new business. The old businesses are run by Colombians who are out to protect themselves - and will not give you the time of day. This includings the major consulting companies. Email me for less rant, more details.
