Hola everyone,

Long term reader, first time user, l will be travelling to Cerete, Cordoba in the new year, could any of you give me advise on where to stay in the upper end of the accommodation scale?

Cerete it's small town, pretty but I don't think is much to do there, you will find very few hotels I think there are 2 which are the best ones but don't expect 4 or 5 start treatment, i think very few tourist go there. I went there when i was a teenager and got bored, but maybe that is what being teenager is about heheh

Hotel Plaza NariƱo telephone 57746204.
Hotel Las Acacias 57747318

May I ask why are you going there?

Thanks for the advice Kat1, l have to go there for business, well sort of l am visiting a friend in Bogota and while doing this l will go across to Cerete for a few days,to make my trip a legitimate tax deduction, l was thinking should l just stay in Monteria and catch a cab to Cerete.

I know what you are saying, anything that is related to the cattle industry is sooo boring, not only as a teenager but a 33 yr old male!

Monteria has very good hotels, but every time I went to Monteria I stayed with my grandmother, last time I stayed in a hotel there was on my honeymoon we stayed in the Monteria Real, (57) (4) 7822731 the daughter of the hotel owner if he still is the owner is married to a gringo :) it was good and stylish hotel in that time, I don't know now, there are quite few good hotels there but unfortunately none of them have a website, to tell you the truth I haven't been in Corboba for a long time, I was born there, near Monteria, my sister was born in Monteria, I have lot's of families around Cordoba i used to spend my Christmas there before I got married.

A cab would be OK as Cerete is very close to Monteria just 18 km you can go just for a day.and if i am not wrong the same road takes you to Monteria airpot about 8 km

Kat is right. I have been to Cerete and spent a lot of time in Monteria since my mother-in-law lives there. I would stay in Monteria since there is a lot more to do there than in Cerete.

One of the city's principal hotels is the Hotel Sinu, Cra 3a, 31-38, Monteria. Phone 57-4-782-3355.

There is nothing boring about the cattle business. I had a ranch for many years and my mother-in-law has a finca with a small herd of cattle. The thing I've never understood about Colombia is why they always have those damm Zebus? Texas is just as hot and we do well with the Brahma/English crosses like the Brangus. I think Brangus would do well in Colombia and I think they're a much better cow than those Zebus.

I assume your Spanish is ok. If so I can PM you my mother-in-law's number. She's got a mal genio but she knows everyone in Monteria.

The women are absolutely gorgeous and most of them have never seen a gringo. There are a few in the city but they are well-hidden. A couple of them teach at the University of Cordoba.

JS, brangus is becomming the breed of choice amongst many ranchers in El Valle, since, as you know, it has the benefit of resistance to tropical diseases of the zebu and the good beef production of the angus.

This is a good question,

How safe is this destination for a well travelled gringo who speaks no Spanish?

john_stark says on Dec 22, 2007, 17:05:

Cordoba is the safest department in Colombia whether you speak Spanish or not. You are going to have some interesting episodes if you don't speak Spanish because no one speaks English. In Monteria we walk around the city at night and talk to people sitting out on their sidewalks talking or playing cards or dominoes. In fact it is one place where I am not constantly on guard looking over my shoulder ready for anything. In Medellin you're always thinking about it. I highly recommend Monteria.

Monteria is one of the few cities I have not visited in Colombia, but I have always heard good things about it, the fact that it is hot and dusty not withstanding. And the fact that they eradicated the FARC early on is just another plus.
