A visit to the DAS: a date with doom

Anyone who has stayed in Colombia for more than two months knows the feeling of doom that creeps over you when That Time of the Month rolls around again... Yes, the dreaded monthly visit to the DAS office for a visa extension.

Don't know about you .. But I have always found DAS to be very professional ......it is the tourists who turn up in dirty clothes and probably been out partying all night . THEY ARE THE PROBLEM.. ....Read what you need to take with you and then follow the rules ....

Smile and everyone will wonder what they are missing.

KAT just a thought about your post here, When is the last time you actually needed or went to DAS to know the problems?
Have you had to do the recently? I am not trying to be rude I promise. It is simply a question.
There is a lot of good help in that process here.

Just taking life easy. I worked hard for it and deserve it and now doing it.

it is a tourist stamp extension, not really a in the passport visa. It is the electronic passport stamp. Stamped 30-60-90 days, etc. . Although, if your real visa expires, you also can get an extension at DAS, and to register it. Each extension they take prints.

Just to pull it back where it started, there's a middle aged Thai guy that owns a driving range on Koh Samui who speaks with a beautiful nawlins accent. It's worth the price of a bucket just to look at that face and hear that accent

That articule does not accurately reflect the Medellin office. If you are smart you do line up 20 minutes or so early outside and then in the order you are lined you are allowed into the fenced area. Yes you do give up your cellphone and recieve a visitors pass. And then it is onto the room where you will first see the receptionist and after a review of your documents you will most likely have to fill out a form and then run and get it copied at a nearby business or take your seat and wait. You are given a number and so in most cases running up the street for additional copies does not change your place in line. Sometimes if there has been a line outside waiting and you were not one of the first 5 people then a line does form initially upon entrance into the room becuase of the receptionists desk position at the door. I have never seen the wiggum guy described.

I have come into a room full of seated people and not waited more than about 1 hour to see a clerk. The process is finshed with the ink finger printing.

This guy has obviously never sat through a waiting room of immigration in the USA. If he had he would have not been so negative about his experience. They are the most insensitive people to the needs of their clients. Take the indifference that you experience when waiting in a long line at any US post office, and multiply it 10 times to appreciate the indifference and insensitivity of US immigration personell.

This guy wanted to have an impact with his hyperbole and he did. But most of us probably besides acknowledging the negative of countless photocopies and the lack of tissue or cotton to clean your fingers of ink did not experience the freak show he described.

I am dissapointed that Colombian Reports would print this tabloid fodder.
